The scorching summer weather did not deter about 30 inspired athletes who have attained the qualifying norms for 6th IAAF World Youth Championships, S?dtirol, Italy (8 – 12 July), at the recently concluded Indian youth meet at Madurai (29-31 May).

It was in fact the second major championship held in this venue after the senior inter-state meet held last year, which had served as the selection trials for the Indian Team for the Beijing Olympics.

Punjab’s shot putter Gurwant Singh and Andhra sprinter G. Mounika were the cynosure of all eyes in the three-day meet at the M.G.R. Race Course Stadium at Temple City.  Mounika came out of the blocks like a fountain spring and sprinted to 200m for a national youth best of 24.88 secs.

Singh heaved the iron ball to 18.20m, but barely missed Saurabh Vij’s national mark by 25 cm. Aptly Singh adjudged as best athlete among boys while the honour went to Mounika for girls. In all six new national marks and seven meet records went in to oblivion during the above championships.

Near namesakes Prabhjot Singh and Prabhjot Kaur shattered the national marks in the Discus Throw for boys (59.62m) and girls (45.08m) respectively. Ankit Sharma leaped to 7.41m and Parminder Kumar Patel vaulted 4.30m to set the other national records in the boys division. Maharashtra’s Monika Athare clocked an impressive 10:09.15 in the girls’ 3000m run before adding the 1500m gold for a double. Punjab’s Prabhjot Kaur was the other athlete to win a double through victories in Shot Put and Discus Throw.
