Embu, KenyaKenya's Isabella Ochichi sprinted to a comfortable 1500m race win at the fourth AK Weekend meeting on Saturday (16 April) in this small town near Mount Kenya, some 150km north east of Nairobi.

Ochichi, the Olympic 5000m silver medallist who was competing in Kenya fresh from her 10km victory over Paula Radcliffe in New Orleans, USA, opted to run the 1500m rather than her speciality 5000m because of the condition of the track, which was made of murram.

“I am just starting off again after a great cross country and road race season. I could not do 5000m on this track but I hope to run the race later as the season builds up,” said Ochichi.

“I want to run the 5000m until I get a World title, preferably in Helsinki at this summer’s World Championships. That is my prayer for this season. I had earlier wanted to move up to 10,000m but I realised it is important to fulfill my mission in the 5000m first,” said Ochichi.

Ochichi, representing Kenya Police, won the 1500m race in 4:31.12 as Katunge Mutune from Eastern and Mary Kaitany from Hidden Talent followed her home in second (4:32.56) and third (4:35.77) respectively.

1996 World Junior 800m champion Joseph Mutua Mwengi, who set the African indoor 800m record in 2004, running for Moi Air Base, easily won the 400m race in 47.14, with policeman Ezra Sambu, second in 48.30. Sambu's wife, Josephine Nyarunda of Moi Air Base, was second in the women's 200m in which she timed 25.4 seconds behind Elizabeth Muthoka in 25.2.
