The former IAAF General Secretary and Croatia’s two-tme IAAF World Championships High Jump gold medallist Blanka Vlasic, who is a native of Split, together helped plant 120 olive trees to commemorate the 2010 IAAF/ VTB Bank Continental Cup in Split on Thursday.

“We decided to perpetuate these memories at the Stadion Park Mladež (in the Brodarica neighbourhood of the city and which is the home of the ASK Split athletics club) where we planted 120 olives.

“Each olive will represent one of the athletic stars and their name will be written on a plaque beneath the olive. Every olive will have its own story,” said the event organisers.

Split has historically been a city which has frequently demonstrated its love for athletics.

The 1979 Mediterranean Games and 1990 European Athletic Championships were also held there, and several World records have been achieved at meetings in the city.
