Two maroonandgold clad teams, Wolmer’s Boys and Holmwood girls, are the champions of Jamaica High School track & field.

These championships are always important and are significant this year as this athletics super-power continues its preparations for the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, in 19-25 July.

On an exciting final day, Saturday (27 Mar) at the National Stadium in Kingston, both team titles went down to the finals events. In the end, Holmwood Technical, who trailed Edwin Allen for most of the Championships, pulled off a 15-point victory, winning 273.33 to 258.

It was even closer on the boys’ side. Heading into the final event, the boys’ 4x400m, Wolmer’s and Calabar were tied on points, 198.5, which mean the higher place finisher in the event would win Champs. It turned out to be Wolmer’s, the school of Michael Frater, who crossed the finish line in second for 10 points, leaving Calabar way back in 7th for only three points.

The final points tally read, Wolmer’s 208.5, Calabar 201.5, Kingston College (KC) 192, Jamaica College (153) and St. Jago 110.

In the senior 100m events which are of course significant with respect to Jamaica's Moncton ambitions, Julian Forte of Wolmer’s with 10.49 on Friday and 21.32 on Saturday, along with Antonique Campbell of Herbert Morrison with 11.73 and 23.96 completed double wins.

Shericka Jackson of Vere was also on the winner’s podium twice after taking the 200/400 metres Class Two double in 23.98 and 53.74.

In the girls’ 400 metres hurdles, Edwin Allen’s sister pair of Nikita (57.42) and Ristananna (58.96) finished first and second respectively.

On the track, three records were broken on the final day; however, Manchester High’s Natoya Goule was the meet’s only triple winner, while Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield was a double record breaker.

Goule won the 1500m Class One in a record 4:29.81 and the 800m in 2:06.44, along with the 3000m open in 10:28.60. Campbell ran 14:18.55 to break the boys’ 5000m open record, adding to his 3:45.54 1500m Class One record on Friday (26).

In the 4x100m, Edwin Allen’s Class Four (Under-14) girls ran 47.58 to set a new record, so too did Jamaica College’s boys’ team with their 43.04 clocking in the Class Three (U-14) event. Holmwood sprint medley girls also were in record-breaking form with their 4:01.92.

In the individual sprint, Jamaicans favourite events, Kevaughn Rattray produced the only sprint record of the meet. Competing in the Class Three or Under-15 boys 100 metres, Rattray of St. Jago High School stopped the clock at10.90 seconds to beat Jamaica College’s Edward Clarke Jr., who was second in 11.06. Rattray wiped more than a second off the previous record of 11.91 set by Adam Cummings of Munro in 2008.
