2008 Olympic bronze medallist Nadzeya Ostapchuk blasted a 21.70m national record in the Shot Put to highlight this weekend’s Belarus national championships.

Ostapchuk’s effort on Friday (12) elevated the 29-year-old to the No. 3 position all-time indoors with the fourth farthest performance.

Ostapchuk, the 2005 World champion, broke her own national indoor mark in the first round when she reached 21.23m. She passed her second attempt, fouled on her third, before hitting the big one in the fourth. She then passed her two remaining attempts.

“It is great to compete in strong company with a considerable number of good competitors,” said Ostapchuk, whose previous bests were 21.09m outdoors and 20.86m indoors. “The fourth attempt in which I made the least errors was the most daring of all. There is a month before the World indoor championships so there is time to correct the mistakes.”

In a quality competition, Natalia Mikhnevich, the reigning Olympic silver medallist, was second with a 20.28m toss in the first round. She will join Ostapchuk in Doha.

Yanina Karolchyk-Pravalinskay?, the 2000 Olympic champion, was third, with an 18.57m best.

National record for Mikhnevich as well

Andrei Mikhnevich, also the Olympic bronze medallist, had a memorable weekend after a 21.81m toss, the second farthest, indoors or outdoors, of his career. After his opening round 21.46m equaled the national record established in 1984, before taking sole possession with his winning toss in third round. His last two efforts, 21.49m and 21.57m, also surpassed the previous mark.

“The winter season is very successful for me,” said Mikhnevich, who took the World title in 2003. “I’m glad that I managed to rewrite the national record which remained for more than a quarter of a century. From the six attempts the most decent was the third in which I showed the best result. But not everything that I wanted has been completely realized.”

Finishing second was Pavel Lyzhyn who produced five throws beyond 20m, capped by 21.00m toss in the third round. Both he and Mikhnevich will compete in Doha.

Elsewhere, Natallia Kareiva from Lida became the double champion with victories in the 800m (2:04.89) on Saturday (13) and 1500m (4:10.47) on Friday (12), but in Doha will apparently only focus on the 800m. Another double winner was Maxim Lynsha who won the 60m in 6.82 and then the 60m Hurdles in 7.69. Sviatlana Usovich won the 400m in 52.81. Anastasiya Shvedova added a centimetre to the national record in the Pole Vault with a 4.41m clearance. Sviatlana Kudzelich took the title in the rarely-contested 3000m Steeplechase with 9:49.56.

Hammer throwers impress at the National Throws Cup

Hammer throwers Pavel Kryvitski from Grodno and Darya Pchelnik produced the best marks at the National Throws Cup held earlier in the week on 9 and 10 February in Minsk.

Kryvitski threatened the 79-metre mark with his 78.98m winning throw, just shy of his 80.02m career best from 2008. World University Games champion Yury Shayunou was second, reaching 77.28m.

Pchelnik, who was fourth at the 2008 Olympics, capped a consistent series with a 72.33m throw in the final round.

“I’m very glad that many things were successful,” said Pchelnik, whose 76.33m career best dates back to 2008. “It’s encouraging and shows we are on the right track as we continue to prepare for the summer.”
