Trinec, Czech RepublicPole vaulter Jirina Ptacnikova and hurdlers Lucie Skrobakova and Petr Svodoba captured the spotlight at the Czech championships over the weekend (17-18) in the northeastern city of Trinec.

Ptacnikova jumped a championships’ record of 4.66m and took some solid attempts at a would be national record of 4.76m to cap the competition on Saturday (17). Czech sprint record holders ran well in the heats. Skrobakova set meeting record of 12.90 in the 100m Hurdles while Svoboda finished in 13.33, which was only 0.04 behind his championships record from Tabor two years ago. Both sprinters were only marginally slower in the finals, clocking 12.92 and 13.36 respectively.

Katerina Cechova and Czech record holder Jana Veleba confirmed their positions in the 100m win in 11.59 and 10.46 respectively. Discus thrower Libor Malina secured a record 13th title with a 60.11m effort. Long distance runner Petra Kaminkova added a 17th title thanks to her victory in the 10,000m to clearly possess the largest collection of golds overall.

The second day of action was hampered by the rain which began in the early stages of the programme. The biggest Czech star, World Javelin Throw record holder Barbora Spotakova, was the clear winner with 61.32m. The men’s throwers were lucky enough to compete in dry conditions. Vitezslav Vesely made the best of it by throwing 81.72m.

The only individual double of the championships was turned in by Milan Kocourek who took the 1500m and 5000m titles in a span of 90 minutes. The surprise winner of a slow and tactical 800me was Jan Kubista, the son of the 1500m national record who won’t celebrate his 20th birthday until 20 September. Collecting their eighth title in a single event were discus thrower Vera Cechlova on Saturday and Jiri Vojtik in a very tight finish in the 200m.

Trinec, which in not far from Ostrava, hosted the championships for third time after 1997 and 2007.

Squad for Barcelona announced

Forty-one athletes - 22 women and 19 men – met the standards set by the Czech Athletic Federation for the European Championships. None achieved the criteria in Trinec, which provided the final opportunity prior to Gothenburg. Of note: Decathlon World record holder Roman Seberle, the only title defender from Gothenburg, will miss Barcelona because of injury. The youngest athlete, Jana Slaninova, daughter of Tatana Kocembova-Netolickova, is just 20 years old. Libor Malina, at 37, is the oldest.
