Poland is sending a team of 25 athletes to the 11th IAAF World Indoor Championships, Moscow, Russia (10 -12 March).
The pole vaulters Monika Pyrek and Anna Rogowska have the biggest medal chances, although the latter’s appearance was confirmed just on Wednesday, after a favourable doctor’s diagnosis. Rogowska has reduced her training load because of pain in her Achilles tendon. Before the Championships she is also going to compete twice in Lievin, France, on 3 March (with Pyrek) and on 5 March during the European Indoor Cup.
As usually both 4x400m Relays squads should have something to say medal-wise, despite the lack of hurdler Anna Jesien in women’s and Robert Mackowiak, Piotr Rysiukiewicz in the men’s relay.
Pawel Czapiewski’s appearance is dependent on his result from Chemnitz on Friday, where he should run below 1:48.00 for 800m
In the previous 10 editions of the World Indoor Championships, Poland has gained two gold medals (Sebastian Chmara – Heptathlon in Maebashi 1999 and men’s 4x400 relay in Lisbon 2001), as well as 5 silver and 5 bronze. Two years ago in Budapest the Polish team secured only 3 fourth places – this time they hope to go home with medals.
