Pune, India  Said Regraugui overcome hot and humid weather conditions to win the 21st edition of Pune International Marathon on Sunday (26). Regraugui, a Moroccon by birth who migrated to Sweden four years ago, halted the Kenyan domination at Pune. Kenyan runners took seven titles including four-in-a-row during 2002-05.

The Kenyans, however, had a celebration time when Hellen Nzembi Musyoka lead the clean sweep of medals in the women’s half-marathon.  She had to fight it out with country-mate Cathy Mutwa, the winner of Hutch Delhi Half Marathon last month.  Mutwa suffered her first defeat of this season and finished second with a time of 73:31 while the winner was 11 seconds faster (73:20) for the INR 150,000 (approx. USD 3,000) prize purse.  Their team-mate Pauline Mutwa Thitu filled the other spot on the podium clocking 75:09. Mutwa and Thitu collected INR 100,000 and INR 75,000 respectively.

Regraugui, who clocked a personal best 2:14:52 for a seventh place finish in the Italian town of Treviso earlier this year (12 Mar), ran a tactical race for his first major victory in a time of 2:18:23.  Tanzanian runner Oswald Kauruzi Revellian (2:19:46) and Ethiopian athlete Abebe Seyoum (2:20:17) claimed the next two places.  Seyoum was sixth in New Delhi Marathon in February this year, with a PB of 2:17:52.  The winner Regraugui was awarded with a trophy and prize money of INR 300,000 (approx. USD 6,000) while the second and third place finishers received INR 150,000 and INR 75,000 for their efforts.

The top-finishers among the Indians, Kennedy Chinna Ramu (13th in 2:29:03) and Madhuri Gurnule (8th in 80:31), were honoured with a cheque for rupees one lakh each from the total prize money of INR 2 million.

Like every other Marathon in the World, Pune has got charity runs alongside the main event to raise funds for so many causes and the main theme devoted to AIDS awareness and prevention.
