David Rudisha and Jenn Suhr, a pair of London 2012 Olympic Games champions, are among the first stars named for the 2013 IAAF Diamond League meeting in New York – the 2013 adidas Grand Prix – on 25 May.

Kenya’s 800m World record-holder and the American pole vaulter have already given fans at Icahn Stadium performances to remember in their previous appearances at the meeting.

Last year, Rudisha ran the fastest 800m in history on US soil when he scorched his way to a 1:41.74 victory here.

To no one’s surprise, his 2012 performance turned out to be a preview of his Olympic race, when the Kenyan broke his own World record by winning the gold medal in 1:40.91. He is also the reigning World champion and Rudisha now holds six of the 10 fastest 800m times in history.

“Coming to New York was fantastic for me,” said Rudisha in his post-race TV interview after his race in the Ichan Stadium last year.

In 2007, Suhr broke her own US Pole Vault record when she became the first US woman to clear, in imperial measurement, 16 feet with a vault of 4.88m.

Coming off her Olympic triumph, Suhr broke the World indoor record on Saturday (* subject to ratification) when she jumped 5.02m to win her seventh US indoor title. As well as taking the 2008 Olympic Games silver medal, Suhr has also won six US outdoor titles and is the second highest vaulter ever outdoors.

Joining them in New York in less than three months will be a trio of top Americans: sprinter Tyson Gay, the three-time World champion in 2007 as well as US 100m record-holder and the second-fastest man in history over that distance; Michael Tinsley, who won the 2012 Olympic 400m Hurdles silver medal; and sprinter Bianca Knight, a 2012 Olympic Games 4x100m gold medallist who was part of the quartet that set a World record in that event in London.

The adidas Grand Prix is third stop in the 2013 Samsung Diamond League. It is in its ninth year at Icahn Stadium, with the meeting staged in conjunction with the Randall’s Island Sports Alliance.
