31 March 2000 – London - Double 1500 metres Olympic Champion Sebastian Coe, was among the names of 33 new Peers who were appointed by Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair to the reconstructed House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament.

Coe who was Olympic 1500 metres champion in both 1980 and 1984, lost his parliamentary seat at the last General Election in 1997 and has since been the Private Secretary to William Hague, the Conservative Party leader who is head of the Opposition in the (Lower) House of Commons.

As well as running Mr Hague's private office, Sebastian Coe who also set a string of middle distance world records in the late 1970's and early 1980's, has also organised a strict fitness regime for the Conservative leader.

Sebastian Coe was one of only four Conservative Peers on the list which also included twenty Labour and nine Liberal Democrats. His title is now Lord Coe, but he has yet to announce after which town or City his title will be named.
