Sprinters Nombulelo Mkenku and Kagiso Kumbane were impressive winners as Marizette Badenhorst set a national youth hammer record on the first day of the South Africa Youth and Junior Championships at the Pilditch Stadium (13).

Athletics South Africa’s is using the two-day event to select teams for the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic in July and the Africa Junior Championships in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in August.

Mkenku was a runner away winner in the junior women’s 100m in a time of 11.54 seconds. “My inspiration comes from clinching a silver medal at the South Africa Senior Championships last month. I know the best will come at the Africa championships,” says Mkenku.

She was runner up to the former Africa 100m champion Geraldine Pillay at the senior championships. Now her sights are set on making an impact at the Africa Junior championships in Burkina Faso.

Meanwhile Kagiso Kumbane won the junior men’s 100m in a career best of 10.42 seconds. “This victory has come as a great relief. For five years I have been runner up at the national youth or junior championships. Since this is my last year as a junior I want to go out in style by winning the 200m title as well,” says a confident Kumbane.

Perhaps the youths 100m will be the championship’s most successful event. Despite progressing through two preliminary rounds, all ten finalists in the youth men’s and eight in the youth women’s achieved the qualifier for Ostrava. In the youth men’s contest Patrick Vosloo(10.67) carried the day. Newcomer Alyssa Connley (11.94) piped defending champion Bevan Smith (11.95) at the finish line.

Elsewhere, the Marizette Badenhorst retained her national youth women’s hammer title with a national record of 47.40. However she was clearly not satisfied. “Two weeks ago I threw over 48 metres. Since there was no doping test carried out, the record cannot be ratified. So I want to get another chance to throw over 49 metres,” Badenhorst declared.

Junior men’s shot putter Jan JP Hoffman (19.59) and junior women’s discus thrower Simone du Toit (48.34) were comfortable winners in their events. Keenan Watson retained his junior men’s Long Jump title with leap of 7.81m

Other notable performances came in the youth 3000m where Sityhilo Diko (8:34.35) won a tightly contest youth men’s 3000m where the top eight qualified for Ostrava. Similarly, Marli Spies 13.96 won the youth girls hurdles in which five achieved the Ostrava qualifier. Stephan Brink (19.05) lead in the shot put in which four qualified for Ostrava, long jumper Stefan Brits (7.27) qualified with a leap of 7.27m.
