USA's Suzy Favor Hamilton, who is second in the IAAF World Ranking for the women's 1500m, and lies as the ninth fastest runner on the world season list for the event with a 4:01.69 clocking, has announced she has withdrawn from the 9th IAAF World championships in Athletics, Paris 2003 Saint-Denis.

"I wanted to get the word out that I will be unable to compete at the World Championships in Paris," said Favor Hamilton. "About 10 days ago, I came down with a pretty bad lower calf strain.  My therapist, Gerard Hartmann, has put me through intense therapy and I see the progress, but the Championships are coming too soon."

"Gerard has advised me that the injury needs more therapy and a gradual return to running.  He feels the rounds and intensity of the Championships would be too much for my calf to handle at this time.  Though I'm extremely disappointed, I'm taking Gerard's advice because I trust his judgement, and don't want to risk further damage to the injury with an Olympic year approaching."

"Walking away from the Championships while in the form of my life is so difficult (training was going supurb), but the unfortunate timing of the injury leaves me little choice. Gerard expects a full recovery in six weeks."
