Three Asian Records in the National Games

22 November 2001 - Women produced the best performances on the fifth day of the 9th Chinese National Games. Three Asian Records and a World Junior Record were achieved and also one National Record for men.

The best event of the day was the women’s 400m hurdles where Song Yinglan upset the whole field by bettering her personal best set in the 8th National Games in 1997 by more than 1.5 seconds. Song’s winning mark of 53.96 equals Han Qing’s Asian Record set in the 7th edition of the Games in Beijing 1993.  Fastest in the heats, 16-year-old newcomer to the event, Huang Xiaoxiao, pulled 0.05 seconds off the World Junior Record hurdling 55.15. However, Huang only holds the World Junior Record, but not the National Junior Record which is occupied by Li Rui with 54.93 in 1997 - this result was not ratified as a WJR but still stands as a NJR.

Another world-class performance came from Huang Qiuyan, who also became a rare double winner - she won the event in Shanghai 1997 as a 17-year-old. Huang started the competition jumping 14.47m into a strong headwind and was never threatened after that. On round three she got a good wind, +1.8m/s, behind her back and broke Ren Ruiping’s 4 ½ year old Asian Record by 6cm - landing at 14.72m. Ren was also in the competition, but finished only eighth with a result of 13.80m, far behind her best form.

In the women’s hammer throw, 19-year-old Gu Yuan, who held the Asian Record last year, but has been struggling with injuries this season, started surprisingly well: she bettered her season’s best by over 4 metres with her first round effort of 65.83. She made her form clear with 66.04 in round two before taking the Asian Record back under her name with 66.97 in the third round. Liu Yinghui, also a former Asian Record holder, was able to almost answer in the last round, but was left a bit short with a new personal best of 66.15.

Xu Zizhou won his second event running 200m in 20.60, 0.06 off Han Chaoming’s National Record. However, conditions were not good for sprinting today as also women were behind their best marks even for this year. Familiar names, Li Xuemei and Liu Xiaomei from Sichuan Province scored another one-two also in the 200m, Li winning in 22.75 with Liu at 23.15. Li has now won 100/200 double in 8th and 9th National Games and Liu has a second place in all those races.

Ma’s Army did not get any medals in the men’s 800m, instead it was the youngest medal winner ever, Li Huiquan from Heilongjiang Province who crossed the line first. Only 11 days after turning 14, Li won in 1:49.09, a World Junior Age-best for 14-year-olds. Li also holds the 13-year-olds age best with 1:50.38 which he ran on 16 June in the Chinese National Championships.

However, Ma did get one gold medal today - it was Lin Na who secured her second win in the National Games with a final time of 2:00.77in the women’s 800m.  Pre-race favourite Wang Yuanping was second in 2:01.05. Jing Xuezhu won the women’s high jump with a modest height of 1.90m and Tan Chunhua was the expected winner in the men’s 400m hurdles with 49.85 just ahead of 17-year-old Zhang Shibao who bettered his personal best running 50.33.

In the men’s Decathlon, 18-year-old Qi Haifeng continued his quest for a new National Record. He opened the day with a personal best in the 110m hurdles, 14.67 and did the same in the second event, discus, with 47.63. Javelin produced third pb of the day and he was over 50 points ahead of his score in Beijing in August where he became the first Chinese to go over 8000 points. 1500m was bit slower, but Qi fought until the finish line and indeed broke his own record with 2 points.  National Record, Asian Junior Record and World Junior Leader 2001 is now 8021 points.

Tomorrow is the last day of the 9th National Games featuring all relay finals, 5000m for both men and women, men’s 50km walk, shot put and triple jump, women’s pole vault and javelin.
