Tunisian duo dominate Tunis Decathlon

9 August 2002 - Tunis - Tunisia's duo of Hamdi Dhouibi and Anis Riahi gave the home crowd something to cheer about when they dominated the decathlon events in the morning session of the penultimate day of the 13th African Championships.

Dhouibi was outstanding in all the morning events winning the 110 metres hurdles (14.48), discus (43.96) and pole vault (4.80) and leads the decathlon standing with 6613 points, as the sparse crowd at the Rades stadium cheered in appreciation. Riahi is in second place with 5980 points after finishing second in the pole vault and discus and third in 110 metres hurdles.

Senegalese Maba Ndiaye was in third position with 5862 ahead of Algeria's Youssef Redouane (5827), Libya's Imed Faraj (5186) and Mohamed Benyahia of Algeria with 3408 points.

Libya's Jonas Sherteel did not continue with Friday's events after scoring 1693 points from 100 metres, long jump and shot put on Thursday.

In the men's 200m, Frank Fredericks won the first heat in 21.32, with Morocco's Mohamed N'Hili in second place in 21.35 and Liberia's Abraham Morlu third in 21.78.

Zimbabwe's Nyo Talkmore won the second 200m heat in 21.53, followed by Ismael Daif of Morocco in 21.59 and Aziz Abdul Zakari of Ghana in 21.64. Senegal's Jacques Sambou took the third heat in 21.16, with Cameroon's Jos Don Batang and Namibia's Sylvester Nauta in second and third places in 21.16 and 21.52 respectively.

The fastest time in the first round was recorded by Oumar Loum of Senegal, who won the fourth heat in 21.10 ahead of Nabil Jabir of Morocco (21.45) and Marius Loua of the Ivory Coast (21.77).

The final two decathlon events the javelin and 1500 metres are due in the evening session. Also in the programme tonight is the pole vault final, men's 400 metres final, women and men's 200m semi-finals, men's 800 metres semi-final, women's hammer final, women's 100 metres hurdles first round, women's 10,000 metres final, and men's 4x400 metres relay final.
