Two South American Records at the Brazilian National Championships
Eduardo Biscayart for the IAAF in Rio

7 June 1999 – Rio de Janeiro - Rio, the "Cidade Maravilhosa" (wonderful city) was host, from Thursday to Sunday, to the XVIII "Troféu Brasil" - the National Championships of Brazil that once again produced several very interesting performances.

Marcio de Souza from Asics Funilense and Lucimar de Moura from Vasco da Gama, who both obtained new Area Records, were voted best athletes of the event. The São Paulo club Asics Funilense, were winners of the club competition.

De Moura, won both the 100 and 200m, improving the latter with a South American record of 22.75. The former area record belonged to Colombian Ximena Restrepo, 22.92 in 1991. She won the 100m with 11.41, after running 11.33 in the heats.

De Souza practically destroyed his own 110 hurdles South American record with 13.38 in the heats. Then in the final he ran again under the former record (13.54: twice broken by himself this year), to take the title in 13.48, ahead of the American Chris Phillips (13.53).

The women’s hurdles also saw some improvement, the 23-year-old from São Paulo Maurren Maggi ran 13.20 in the heats of the 100m hurdles, to improve her personal best of 13.24, and later won the final in 13.28. She also took the long jump with 6.56m.

Sanderlei Parrela won the 400m in 44.82, his 2nd all-time best, after the South American record of 44.72 he achieved at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, last April.

200m bronze medallist at the IAAF World Championships in Athens ‘97, Claudinei da Silva ran a double at 100 and 200m, with easy victories in 10.27 and 20.34. So far this year he has run 10.12 and 20.15, both personal bests.

Argentinean Solange Witteveen, the South American high jump record holder with 1.96, was victorious with a season’s best of 1.91m. Then she came very close to clearing 1.94m in all her three attempts. Brazilian Luciane Dambacher, from Porto Alegre, was 2nd with a personal best of 1.88.

Hudson de Souza, won the 800 and 1500m, with both personal bests of 1:46.33 and 3:38.32.

In both races, two veterans produced excellent times. In the 800, "The Eternal" José Luiz Barbosa (38 years old) was 4th in 1:47.55, and in the 1500 Luiz José Gonçalves (b. 4.12.58) was 4th with 3:44.89, a new world record for veterans over 40 years old.

Luiz Fernando da Silva, won the javelin with 74.92. Venezuela’s Edwin Cuesta (b. 1.12.81), the South American junior record holder with 75.41 in 98, and still a junior this year, was 2nd with 74.43, a season’s best.

Other remarkable winners were Eronilde de Araújo (49.31 in 400m hurdles), Gustavo Rehder (5.31 in PV), the men’s 4x100 relay from Funilense (38.90), Luciana Mendes, coming back after giving birth last year to win the 800m in 2:04.67 (2:03.86 in the heats), Ana Paula Pereira (57.47 in 400h, with 57.29 in the heats), veteran Soraya Telles (will turn 40 years old in September), with 10:38.98, Elisangela Adriano (18.63 in SP and 57.52 in DT), and Sueli dos Santos in the JT (54.83 with the new javelin).

This was the last competition for the Brazilians before the South American Championships, which will be held in Bogotá, Colombia, from June 25 to 27. Following that, the next challenge takes place in Winnipeg, Canada for the Pan American Games at the end of July.
