Ukhov - 2.32m

Even in the absence of World Indoor Yaroslav Rybakov and European outdoor champion Andrey Silnov, the men’s High Jump was expected to be the main attraction of the final day of the final day of the Russian Championships. The young prodigy Ivan Ukhov won the event practically without any visible resistance from his opponents. He cleared the bar at 2.32m but then failed at 2.36.

All the other jumpers were left very far behind. Aleksey Dmitrik, Andrey Tereshin, and the former World champion Vyacheslav Voronin cleared the bar at 2.25m. Dmitrik got the silver on count-back, with third place shared between Tereshin and Voronin.

Udmurtova has famous mentor

In the women’s Triple Jump, Olesiya Bufalova took victory with a 14.30m performance. Runner-up Oksana Udmurtova who produced 14.12m, is a pupil of Vyacheslav Dogonkin the coach of the world famous Tatyana Lebedeva. Another experienced triple jumper Yelena Oleinikova took third.

Khudoroshkina matches best result of the season

As expected it was Irina Khudoroshkina, 38(!) who got the title in the Women’s Shot Put with an excellent effort of 19.01m that equals the best result of the current world indoor season (Assunta Legnante ITA – 20 Jan 2007). Anna Omarova was second with 18.81, a career best which makes here currently the third best of the indoor season. Olga Ryabinkina, 30, the World Championship silver medallist who is not at her best at the beginning of the season settled with 18.58 for third.

Shkurlatov still gets applause

The chief coach of the national team Valeriy Kulichenko was not really satisfied with the results in the men’s Long Jump. But contrary to his reaction the public burst into a spontaneous ovation for the long jumper from Volgograd Vitaliy Shkurlatov after he took the title with a 7.89m leap. Denis Sinyavskiy was a bit behind him (7.83) and Dmitriy Sapinskiy finished next with 7.78.

The event is rarely run during the indoor season but in Volgograd the 5000m was officially included in the championship programme.

In the women’s race Galina Yegorova was more patient and faster then the others clocking 15:54.65. She was followed home by Elizaveta Grechishnikova (15:57.98) and Yekaterina Prikladnykh (15:59.53).

The twin brothers Yevgeniy and Anatoliy Rybakov did most of the work in the men’s 5000m but Anatoliy was so tired by the finish that he only had strength to secure sixth. His brother Yevgeniy took the glory with14:11.40. Aleksey Reunkov was the runner-up (14:11.94) and Aleksandr Skeletov was third (14:12.94).

The team from St.Petersburg won men’s 4x200m relay – 1:27.67. The Women’s quartet of Tula was the fastest at the same distance – 1:35.87.
