The surprise of last summer’s outdoor World Championships, Yargelis Savigne of Cuba, was the first qualifier for the final with a personal best 14.52m, eight centimetres further than she has ever jumped indoors. That is 30cm below her outdoor best, but it was a confident jump that showed there was more to come for tomorrow’s final.

Russia's defedning champion Tatyana Lebedeva responded with 14.37 to also go through at the first attempt. Struggling to match her summer rivals was World champion, Trecia Smith of Jamaica, who left it until her final jump to squeeze past the 14.15 qualifying mark by one centimetre.

The automatic qualifiers from Group A were Yamile Aldama of the Sudan on a season’s best 14.40, Bulgaria’s Balkan champion Tereza Marinova, 14.27, Russian champion Anna Pyatykh, 14.24, and Slovakia’s Dana Veldakova who set new national figures of 14.21 in round two.

Going through in Group B behind Savigne and Lebedeva were the Ukraine’s Oleksandra Stadnyuk, 14.19, and Smith. Despite a season’s best 14.14, Spain’s Carlota Castrejana went out while Costa Keila of Brazil improved the Area record to 14.11, but also failed to progress. Senegal’s Kene Ndoye, the country’s first World Indoor medallist in 2003, bowed out with a season’s best of 13.88.
