The United States will send a team of 79 athletes to the IAAF World U20 Championships Tampere 2018 on 10-15 July.

As expected from the nation that tops the all-time medals table for the World U20 Championships, the team is full of medal prospects. Some athletes, meanwhile, will make history just by taking part.

Alyssa Wilson will become the first US athlete to compete in three throwing events at the same global championships. The Pan-American junior shot put champion, who earned shot put bronze at the 2006 World U20 Championships, booked her three spots on the team by winning the shot put and the hammer at the US Junior Championships. Wilson, who tops the 2018 world U20 list for the hammer, also finished second in the discus to guarantee her place on the team in that event.

Wilson isn’t the only athlete on the team to have previously stood on the podium at a global age-group championships.

Samantha Watson, winner of the 800m in Bydgoszcz two years ago and at the 2015 World U18 Championships, will defend her title. Sprint hurdler Tia Jones, meanwhile, will look to add to the bronze medal she earned in 2006.

The team features several other medallists from the 2015 World U18 Championships, including long jump winner Tara Davis, shot put champion Adrian Piperi, 200m silver medallist Lauren Rain Williams and 100m bronze medallist Jayla Kirkland.

Numerous athletes will also be lining up in more than one event, including Cory Poole in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, JuVaughn Blake in the high jump and long jump, Eric Harrison in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, Caitlin Collier in the 800m and 1500m, Cailie Logue in the 3000m and 5000m, and Jasmine Moore in the long jump and triple jump.
