World youth leader Christopher Taylor will be aiming to keep the 400m title in Jamaican hands but he’ll have to beat back a two-prong attack by the strong US duo of Keshun Reed and Josephus Lyles.

Taylor, still just 15, comes armed with 45.55 and 45.69 performances, the two fastest times in the world, and had confident victories at the CARIFTA Games and Cayman Invitational.

However, on paper at least, the US pair are not too far behind.

Reed, 17, clocked 45.75 to win the notoriously difficult Texas state high school title while Lyles, 16, took the US youth title in 45.77 beating Reed into second place.

Lyles brings big-meeting experience to the table too; last year he ran the first leg for the victorious US 4x400m relay squad at the IAAF World Junior Championships.

Look out too for Jamal Walton of the Cayman Islands (46.22) and Karabo Sibanda of Botswana, this year’s African junior champion with a best of 46.33 at altitude.

Five others have run faster than 47 seconds: Canada’s Michael Aono (46.79), Australia’s Louis Stenmark (46.80), Germany’s Marvin Schlegel (46.92), Jamaican number two Anthony Carpenter (46.92) and France’s Loic Prevot (46.98).
