The chief medal challengers would appear to be the three boys who have hurled the 5kg shot beyond 21 metres. Leading the way is Swedish talent Wictor Petersson following a mighty 21.26m effort in early June.

Poland’s 16-year-old Szymon Mazor has registered both 21.17m and 21.12m marks this year while US athlete Adrian Piperi, who reached 21.06m to win the US youth title in late June, is also in prime form.

The South African duo Burger Lambrechts (not to be confused with the three-time former African shot champion of the same name) and Patrick Duvenhage, with season's best marks of 20.89m and 20.62m respectively, should also be factored into the equation.

Other names to look out for are Egypt’s Shehab Mohamed Abdulaziz and Mexico’s Alejandro Castillo, who have reached 20.78m and 20.69m respectively.
