More than 200 runners from 15 countries have entered the 17th edition of Gorski tek na Grintovec mountain running race, the third stage of 2015 Mountain Running World Cup, in the Slovenian town of Kamnik on Sunday (26).

The course is a real mountain course, going from the Kamniska Valley which is itself at 602m all the way up to the summit of the Grintovec mountain at 2558m.

With almost 2000m of elevation over less that 10km usually normal hikers will need about six hours to reach the summit but the course records are held by New Zealand’s Jonathan Wyatt and Czech Republic’s Anna Pichrtova at 1:15:43 and 1:31:50 respectively, both set in 2006.

Among this year’s entries are Switzerland’s David Schneider, who recently won the silver medal at the 2015 European Mountain Runn8ing Championships, and Kenya’s Francis Wangari, who was third here 2014.

This pair will be challenged by local runners Nejc Kuhar and Simon Alic, who know the course well.

Kuhar finished second last year and third in 2012.

After almost one month with temperatures in the high 30 degrees Celsius, the weather forecast suggests that there could be storms during the night before the race on Saturday and the runners could enjoy some more helpful conditions.
