A German-Chinese dual match is the name of the game in the girls' shot put. Selina Dantzler start as favourite following a consistent series of results this season, topped by her recent 18.19m.

Dantzler's compatriot Jule Steuer is not far behind in terms of personal best at 18.01m, but she set that mark indoors, and her 2017 outdoor best stands at just 17.27m. On the other hand, she can rely on the championship experience she gained while taking the European U18 silver last year, when she set her current outdoor best of 17.97m.

Of the two Chinese entrants, Yu Tianxiao looks the stronger, having won both the national and Asian U18 titles this year, the latter with a personal best of 17.51m. Sun Yue has a best of 17.39m, but to her credit, she has the longest throw this year by an U18 athlete with the senior shot at 16.34m.

Denisa Preckova of the Czech Republic is the only other girl in the field who has reached 17 metres, with a best of 17.13m.
