American Mark Crear established a new world best for the season in the 110m hurdles clocking 12.98 during the IAAF Permit Meeting in Zagreb.

Crear, who won the American trials in Eugene 10 days ago, became yesterday only the sixth man in the world to have broken the 13 seconds barrier.

Renaldo Nehemiah was the first to run the distance in less than 13 seconds back in 1981. His world record of 12.93 lasted almost a decade before falling to the assault of fellow American Roger Kingdom who clocked 12.92 in 1989 in Zurich.

The double Olympic champion lost his world record to Britain’s Colin Jackson who clocked 12.91 at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993. Two other men have also broken the 13 seconds barrier, Allen Johnson (12.92 twice) and Jack Pierce (12.94) – both of the USA.
