Australian pole vaulter Emma George today bettered the world outdoor record for the women's pole vault from the mark of 4.57 she set in Auckland on 21 February.

George set her new mark of 4.58m in competition in Melbourne, during the Australian national championships. She had previously hit the bar twice at 4.35. She cleared the new record height on her second attempt. She said afterwards: "I try to improve my technique every time I jump. Today I was struggling to get over 4.35 at the start."

George will attempt to regain the indoor record again in Adelaide in two weeks time. She lost the record to America's Stacy Draghila and Daniela Bartova of the Czech Republic last week, when the two set a new mark of 4.48m in Sindelfingen (GER).

Today's record was the 13th set by George in her career as a pole vaulter.
