Event Report Women Javelin Throw Qualification

The best of the field in the javelin qualification was Australian Joanna Stone, who threw a personal best of 67.72 in Group B. Stone showed good form before the championships as she bettered her personal best also in the last competition before coming to Athens. Trine Hattestad (Norway) got through to the final with her first attempt, of 66.12. She was the best in Group A. The third best overall was the 1996 Olympic champion, Heli Rantanen of Finland. Rantanen struggled with her first throw, but the second one landed at 64.46. Mikaela Ingberg, also from Finland, threw 63.92 in the first round to qualify automatically. There were a total of 9 athletes over the automatic qualification standard of 62.50. Among these Mirela Manjani-Tzelili threw a personal best of 63.50 in her first major championships for her new country, Greece. Sonia Bisset (Cuba) 63.48, Tanja Damaske (Germany) 63.30 and Felicia Tilea (Romania) with 63.06 all qualified on their first attempts. A mark of 60.90 was needed to make the final. The last person to qualify was one of the world's leading throwers this year, 18 year old Osleidis Menendez of Cuba, competing in her first major meet. Among those not to make it were Silke Renk (Germany) throwing 60.72 for 13th and Karen Forkel (Germany) 60.70 for 14th place.
