Melinte Sets Hammer Throw World Record

Clermont-Ferrand (France) - 13 May – Romanian Mihaela Melinte established a new world record of 75.97m in the hammer throw improving the previous mark (73.14) by more than two metres. Melinte who holds the hammer throw world record since 1997, bettered her own previous mark twice in a meeting which only scheduled hammer throw (Men and Women) contests. In her fifth attempt she reached the mark of 73.29m before her last effort of 75.97m. Melinte who won the 1998 European championships in Budapest will be the hot favourite in Seville for the hammer throw first appearance at the IAAF World Championships.
