Just a week after establishing a new British 10,000m record in Lisbon and three weeks after her silver medal in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Marrakech, 25-year-old Paula Radcliffe set a new world best over 5 miles.

Running in glacial conditions in the grounds of Balmoral Castle in Scotland, Radcliffe covered the distance in 24:54,bettering by 15 seconds the previous world best mark of 25:09, set by Kenya's Lornah Kiplagat in Tilburg in 1997.

Watched by a crowd of 1500, which included Princes Harry and William, Radcliffe took the lead just after the first mile, closely followed by compatriots Liz McColgan and Yvonne Murray, and maintained it throughout the race in classic Radcliffe front-running style.
