Trentavis Friday of the USA blasted out of the blocks and rode a 2.3m/s tailwind to a 20.04 victory, becoming USA's first world junior champion in the men's 200m since 1994.

Friday, running in lane four, was clear of the field when the stagger unwound on the homestretch. Barring the excessive tailwind, conditions were close to perfect at Hayward Field.

Behind Friday, Jamaica’s Michael O’Hara got clear of the crowded field first, only to be run down by the fast-closing Divine Oduduru of Nigeria. Oduduru took silver in 20.25, with O’Hara bronze in 20.31.

Uniquely, Friday becomes the first athlete to win a global title on a day that matches his surname.

USA’s Kendal Williams, the 100m champion, did not advance to the final, finishing sixth in his semi-final heat in 21.10. Williams appeared fatigued and only reached the semi-final on time, running 21.16 in his first round heat to finish third.

Friday and Williams will be teammates next year, as both will start at Florida State University in the fall.
