Jiri Sykora of the Czech Republic technically moved into first place (although he had never knowingly ceased to be in that position despite the revision of his long jump mark coming approximately two hours after the shot put finishing) by being the best man in the shot put with his second effort of 15.50m, only 16 centimetres shy of his personal best.
Brazil’s Alex Soares produced the only other toss over 15 metres with a personal best of 15.21m to move up to the eighth place in the overall standings. Russia’s Roman Kondratyev improved his lifetime best to 14.93m and put himself in contention for the medals.
Sykora now has a total of 2596 points but, in a tight contest for the top places, is only eight points in front of Russia’s European junior champion Evgeniy Likhanov, second with 2588 and two points ahead of Belarus’ Yuriy Yeryomich in third place.
Australia’s Cedric Dubler improved his shot best to 13.02m and is still in the fight for the medals with a 2569 total, 27 points behind the leader, followed by Kondratyev with 2556 points.
Norway’s 2013 world youth champion Karsten Warholm fell to seventh in the overall standings with 2487 points following a poor 11.60m effort.
