Kaylin Whitney became the third US female sprinter in the past decade to win the world junior 200m title and the 16-year-old Florida high school student did it in a commanding way with a wind-assisted 22.82 (2.4m/s).

The bronze medallist in 100m two days ago, world leader Whitney – who had the disturbance of being responsible for a faulty start before the race itself got underway – came fast out of the blocks in lane three, with a slight lead over Sweden’s world youth champion Irene Ekelund.

Whitney maintained a narrow lead over Ekelund and found a second gear to hold off the Swedish challenger in the final stretch.

Ekelund finished second with 22.97 coming home ahead of Angela Tenorio of Ecuador, who was almost on the shoulder of the leading pair at 150 metres but weakened slightly over the final quarter of the race.

With her 23.15, Tenorio completed a medal double after her 100m silver, holding off Great Britain’s fast-finishing Shannon Hylton.

Whitney’s gold medal might have been far from a rarity but Tenorio’s two at the championships were the first ones ever won by female athlete from her country, following in the footsteps of Jefferson Perez’s 10,000m race walk win in 1992.
