Brianne Theisen-Eaton opened the pentathlon with an explosive display in the first event, the 60m hurdles.

The 25-year-old, who won the heptathlon silver medal at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, ran a balanced race to win in 8.13, a personal best by 0.04 seconds. This puts the Canadian into medal contention along with world heptathlon champion Hanna Melnychenko.

The 30-year-old Ukrainian also finished with a personal best 8.18 to beat an 8.20 clocking from earlier this indoor season. In a high-standard race, the first five athletes set personal bests.

In third place, Dutch Nadine Broersen equalled her 8.32 mark from the 2013 European Indoor Championships.

In fourth place, world leader Sharon Day-Monroe also had a successful start. Having run 8.44 at the US Championships on her way to the 4805 American record, she now clocked 8.43.

In fifth, Germany’s Claudia Rath was also timed at 8.43 for a personal best, a big improvement to her previous best of 8.56 from earlier this year. Karolina Tyminska of Poland was sixth in 8.50, Alina Fyodorova of Ukraine set a personal best of 8.52 for seventh and one of the pre-competition favourites, Yana Maksimava from Belarus, could not only manage a disappointing 8.75 for the eighth place.
