Omar McLeod won Jamaica’s only gold medal of the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016 with a commanding win in a national record and equal world-leading time of 7.41.

McLeod burst out of the blocks and took the lead from the first hurdle. Flanked by the French duo Pascal Martinot-Lagarde and Dimitri Bascou in lane five, McLeod sailed through the five hurdles to become the first male sprint hurdler from Jamaica to win a global title, 12 years after Maurice Wignall took bronze in Budapest.

Martinot-Lagarde finished second in a season’s best of 7.46 to repeat his silver medal from 2014. World leader Bascou finished third in 7.48 to make 2-3 for France for the second consecutive World Indoor Championships.

It was the first time since the inaugural edition of the World Indoor Championships in 1987 that the United States was left out of the podium in the men’s 60m hurdles.
