New regulations to replace Technical Rule 5 relating to athletic shoes, and its transitional provisions, which expire on 31 December 2021, were approved by Council yesterday. If a shoe is not openly available to all then it will be deemed a prototype and use of it in competition will not be permitted. Subject to compliance with the rules, any shoe that is available to all, but is customised for aesthetic reasons, or for medical reasons to suit the characteristics of a particular athlete’s foot, will be allowed.

The easing of the rules regarding lane infringements are among the competition rule (CR) and technical rule (TR) changes approved by the World Athletics Council which come into force from today (1 November 2021). To preserve the integrity of national records and statistics, the responsibility lies with the Member Federation to ensure that all athletes, officials and competition organisers are fully aware that Rule 5 of the Technical Rules will be applied in full.

JS: The pit lane can, potentially, change the course of the race and make it more exciting. If more athletes are kept involved in the race, then that is no bad thing. I don’t think any race walker goes out to deliberately break the rules. JP: More people finishing the race is a good thing, but technique is still an important part of the race.
