Born: 4 December 1995. Coach: John Blackie.

Born and raised in London, Dina Asher-Smith showed promise from an early age. In 2009, after just two years of training, she clocked a world age-13 best of 39.16 for 300m and then landed her first national title just four days later, winning the 100m at the England U15 Championships.

Numerous national titles followed and in 2011 she made her international debut at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Trabzon, Turkey, but it ended in disqualification for a false start. She rebounded six weeks later to end her season on a high by winning the Commonwealth youth title.

In 2012 she competed at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Barcelona, finishing seventh in the 200m final. But just a few weeks later she enjoyed a championship experience of a different kind when working as a kit carrier at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Just 12 months later, Asher-Smith was named on the British team – alongside many of the Olympians from one year prior – for the IAAF World Championships Moscow 2013. She ran the lead-off leg for Britain’s bronze medal-winning 4x100m squad, becoming the youngest ever medallist in a women’s relay event at the World Championships at just 17 years and 247 days.

Having won the European U20 200m title in 2013, Asher-Smith stepped down to the 100m for the following year’s IAAF World U20 Championships in Eugene, winning in 11.23 (-1.0m/s).

In 2015, her first year as a senior, Asher-Smith became the first British woman to run 100m within 11 seconds, clocking 10.99. Still aged 19, she went on to finish fifth in the 200m at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 in a national record of 22.07, making her the fastest teenager in history at that distance.

She replicated that finish at the following year’s Olympic Games, having won the European 200m title earlier in the year. She also picked up an Olympic bronze medal in the 4x100m.

A broken foot at the start of 2017 threatened to keep her out of action from that year’s World Championships on home soil. But Asher-Smith returned to form and went on to finish fourth in the 200m in London and picked up silver in the 4x100m.

Back to full fitness and having graduated from university with a BA (Hons) degree in history, Asher-Smith has gone from strength to strength in 2018. Following a 200m bronze medal and 4x100m gold at the Commonwealth Games earlier in the year, she reduced her national 100m record to 10.92 in Oslo and went to the European Championships as the marginal favourite in both sprints. She duly delivered, recording lifetime bests of 10.85 and 21.89 to win the 100m and 200m before capping a memorable sprint triple with gold in the 4x100m.
