Kenyan teenagers Dorcus Chepkwemoi and Brian Kiptoo were victorious at the Cross Internacional de Venta de Banos, the 10th Gold level meeting of this season&rsquo;s World Athletics Cross Country Tour, held on Sunday (21).
The races took place on a cold day (3C) over a tough, muddy circuit following non-stop rain on the eve of the competition. In doing so, the unheralded Chepkwemoi and Kiptoo claimed the most remarkable victories of their young careers so far.
The women&rsquo;s event kicked off at a slow pace, with pre-event favourite Chepkwemoi and Spanish duo Carla Gallardo and Isabel Barreiro leading a large front pack. The decisive move came as early as 1.5km into the race when the long-legged Kenyan increased the pace and broke away with ease. The 19-year-old covered the opening 2.3km lap in 8:04, opening an eight-second lead over a chasing group led by Maria Forero and Angela Viciosa, who were two seconds clear of Claudia Corral.
Midway through the second lap, newly crowned European U23 cross-country champion Forero dropped Viciosa to move into a clear second place. Chepkwemoi clocked 7:59 for the lap to extend her lead to 16 seconds over Forero, who in turn was six seconds ahead of Viciosa, now reeled in by Corral.
Over the penultimate loop, Corral left Viciosa behind, while Chepkwemoi posted a slightly slower 8:07 lap but still widened her advantage to 36 seconds over Forero and 43 over Corral. There were no major changes on the final lap as the young Kenyan romped home well clear of Forero, with finishing times of 36:09 and 37:03 respectively, while Corral secured the final podium spot a further 15 seconds back.
&ldquo;The race was very tough,&rdquo; said Chepkwemoi. &ldquo;Every step was complicated because of the mud, and I felt cold throughout. I knew Forero had won the European U23 title last weekend and wanted to push hard as early as possible to secure the win.&rdquo;
The men&rsquo;s contest, also held over 9.3km, saw an early lead by Burundi&rsquo;s Eric Nzambimana, followed closely by Morocco&rsquo;s Abderraahmane Aferdi, Brian Kiptoo and Spaniards Aaron Las Heras and Nassim Hassaous. Hassaous, racing less than two weeks after his marathon debut in Valencia, moved to the front about 5km into the race. Shortly afterwards, Kiptoo slipped and fell on a muddy section but quickly regained his footing to rejoin the leaders.
The opening 2.3km lap was covered in 7:15 before Hassaous&rsquo;s relentless pace reduced the lead group to three, with only Kiptoo and Aferdi able to follow, while pre-race favourite Las Heras began to lose ground. The trio ran a quicker 7:06 second lap, driven by Aferdi at the front, opening a five-second gap on Las Heras in fourth.
Aferdi&rsquo;s pace proved too much for Hassaous, who lost contact with the Moroccan and Kiptoo early in the penultimate lap, timed at 7:03. At the bell, Aferdi and Kiptoo had built a 15-second lead over Hassaous, who himself was eight seconds ahead of Las Heras. The final lap produced a thrilling duel, with both athletes taking turns at the front before Aferdi unleashed a strong surge with 900m remaining, briefly opening a small gap. Kiptoo refused to give in and chased him down.
The pair entered the final 300m on the cinder track separated by just five metres. Aferdi appeared to hold off the late challenge, but Kiptoo surged past in the final 10 metres to claim victory in 31:43 after a fast 6:57 final lap, with Aferdi, a 1:01:15 half marathon specialist, finishing one second behind.
&ldquo;Honestly, I didn&rsquo;t know any of my rivals today so I decided to wait and see in the early laps,&rdquo; said 17-year-old Kiptoo, who has a 5:31.96 PB for the 2000m steeplechase. &ldquo;When Aferdi made his move it was very difficult to follow, but I managed to overtake him at the very end. I&rsquo;ll race again next weekend at another cross country event in Amurrio.&rdquo;

Chepkwemoi and Kiptoo secure Kenyan double in Venta de Banos

Thailand&rsquo;s&nbsp;Puripol Boonson delighted home fans by completing a gold medal treble and breaking a series of records at the Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok (11-16 December).
First, the 19-year-old improved the Asian U20 record and the senior national record to 9.94 in the 100m heats, becoming the joint fifth-fastest U20 athlete in history. The world U20 silver medallist returned to win the final in 10.00 ahead of Indonesia&rsquo;s Lalu Muhammad Zohri (10.25).
Boonson maintained that momentum in the 200m, setting another Asian U20 record and senior national record of 20.07 to win that title clearly ahead of Singapore&rsquo;s Marc Brian Louis (20.72).
The gold medal treble was completed when Boonson teamed up with Thawatchai Himaiad, Chayut Khongprasit and Soraoat Dapbang to win the 4x100m for Thailand in a national record and Games record of 38.28 &ndash; placing them third on the Asian all-time list. Malaysia finished second, also in a national record of 39.03.
Thailand&rsquo;s Kieran Tuntivate also achieved three golds, winning the 1500m in 3:47.50, the 5000m in 14:46.38 and the 10,000m in 29:41.81. He completed a 1500m-5000m double in 2023 and a 5000m-10,000m double in 2019, but went one better in Bangkok, achieving his third victory &ndash; in the 10,000m &ndash; on the final day of athletics competition.
In the women&rsquo;s sprints, Singapore&rsquo;s Veronica Shanti Pereira achieved her second successive 100m and 200m double &ndash; winning the 100m in 11.36 from Thailand&rsquo;s Jirapat Khanonta (11.54) and her fourth Southeast Asian Games 200m title in 23.05 ahead of Vietnam&rsquo;s Le Thi Cam Tu in a national record of 23.14.
The host nation clinched a 4x100m double as Thailand won the women&rsquo;s final in 43.88 ahead of Vietnam (43.91) and Philippines in a national record of 43.97.
The 400m titles were claimed by Thailand&rsquo;s Joshua Atkinson (45.13) and Vietnam&rsquo;s Thi Ngoc Nguyen (52.74), while the 4x400m finals were won by Thailand&rsquo;s men (3:03.07), Vietnam&rsquo;s women (3:25.59) and Vietnam in the mixed relay in a 3:15.07 national record.
The men&rsquo;s pole vault also took place on the final day of athletics competition in Bangkok and that was won by two-time world medallist Ernest John Obiena of Philippines, who clinched his fourth successive Southeast Asian Games title with a 5.70m clearance. He won on countback ahead of Thailand&rsquo;s Patsapong Amsam-ang with a national record, as both athletes achieved the Games record height.
The women&rsquo;s pole vault was won by Indonesia&rsquo;s Diva Renatta Jayadi with a national record of 4.35m.

World and Olympic medallist Nadia Battocletti successfully defended her title at the European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa while Spain&rsquo;s Thierry Ndikumwenayo won the senior men&rsquo;s title in a thrilling finish ahead of world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier on Sunday (14).
A lead pack of three had emerged roughly half way through the women&rsquo;s race with Battocletti running alongside multiple European cross-country champion Yasemin Can and Britain&rsquo;s Megan Keith. With about 18 minutes on the clock, Battocletti started to break away from her last two remaining opponents.
The Italian went on to open up a significant gap to win comfortably in 24:52. Keith managed to break free from Can to take silver in 25:07 ahead of the Turk (25:13).
The men&rsquo;s race was much closer. Gressier moved to the front after about eight minutes and started to push the pace alongside Ndikumwenayo, the bronze medallist last year. After 5km of running, Gressier and Ndikumwenayo had a nine-second lead over Dominic Lobalu.
The lead duo exchanged pole positions several times over the final kilometre and they started sprinting as they approached the final curve. Gressier slightly lost his footing on the last bend, allowing Ndikumwenayo to gain a slight edge as the Spaniard strode to victory in 22:05. Gressier took silver (22:08) and Lobalu came through for bronze (22:23).
Innes Fitzgerald, who earlier this year won the distance double at the European U20 Championships and broke the European U20 5000m record, won her third successive U20 women&rsquo;s title. She dominated the race to win in 14:35, finishing 32 seconds ahead of her nearest challenger, Lucie Paturel of France.
The U20 men&rsquo;s title also went to the continental U20 champion, but the race was much closer. Belgium&rsquo;s Willem Renders won by one second from Spain&rsquo;s Oscar Gaitan, 13:11 to 13:12.
In other races, Spain&rsquo;s Maria Forero won the U23 women&rsquo;s race while Ireland&rsquo;s Nick Griggs took the U23 men&rsquo;s title. Italy won the mixed relay ahead of Portugal and Great Britain &amp; Northern Ireland.
