Gómez highlights South American Youth Champs with 81.15m Hammer effort

30 October 2012 - Argentina’s Joaquín Gómez produced one of the best performances of the 21st edition of the South American Youth (under 18) Championships – “Campeonato Sudamericano de Menores” – which took place in Ciudad de Mendoza, west of Argentina, from 26 to 28 October.

Competing at a brand new facility located at the “Parque General San Martín”, Gómez (born 14 October 1996) dominated the Hammer Throw (5kg) winning the title with 81.15m ( 27 October). This is the fourth improvement of the area record by Gómez, after throwing 74.71m in Rosario on 15 September, 77.11m in Buenos Aires on 6 October and 78.95m in Mar del Plata on 14 October. Gómez’s series in Mendoza was: 73.02, 73.83, 77.22, foul, 78.79 and 81.15.

Gómez comes from a family of Hammer specialists. His father, Daniel, was the South American Champion in 1977 and 1985 (64.66m PB from 1977 with the 7.26kg implement). His sister, Daniela, has won the 2011 South American Junior title (58.64m PB from 2012). The 81.15m performance places Gómez in the fourth spot of the 2012 World Youth Lists. Joaquín also became the first South American Hammer thrower to reach beyond the 80m frontier with any implement. Gómez will remain in the Youth category in 2013, establishing himself as a podium candidate for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk.

Another quality performance was achieved by Brazilian Jefferson Santos (born 30 August 1995) at the Octathlon. Santos won the event with a tally of 6141 points, moving up to the third spot of the 2012 World Youth Lists. The Brazilian had excellent marks at Long Jump (7.22m), Shot Put (15.44m), 110m hurdles (14.27) and High Jump (2.08m).

Other remarkable athlete to observe in the future is Panama’s Arturo Deliser (born 24 April 1997). The 15-year-old won the 100m/200m double with 10.95 (head wind of 1.9 m/s) and 21.31 (head wind of 1.0 m/s).

On the girls’ side, Peruvian Zulema Arenas was the most outstanding athlete after winning the 2000m Steeplechase race with a 6:40.28 performance – a new Championship record. Arenas, born 15 November 1995, moved to second place of the 2012 World Youth Lists. On 22 September she had already obtained the South American under-23 title at 3000m Steeplechase with a NR time of 10:14.52.

Brazilian Tamiris de Liz, 100m bronze medalist at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, won that event in 11.99 (head wind of 3.3 m/s) and didn’t start at the 200m final.

A total of seven new Championship records were set in Mendoza. Once again, the Brazilian dominated the medal table as well as the points’ classification.
