If form lines are to be believed, then this should come down to an all-European battle for the medals, with German pair Jonas Tesch and Timo Northoff taking on Belarus’s Mikhail Samuseu.

Tesch is the leading thrower in the field, the 16-year-old boasting a lifetime best of 20.51m, 4cm better than his compatriot Northoff. However, Samuseu, who has thrown 20.37m this season, will look to ensure the Germans don’t have it all their own way.

In truth, those three hold such an advantage that the medals should be split among them, but at this level it’s unwise to write off the other contenders given the capacity for a teenage breakthrough. South Africa’s Jonathan De Lacey, who has thrown 19.70m this season, could be capable of a podium finish, along with Turkey’s Alperen Karahan, a 19.42m thrower this year.
