Rain may have fallen for most of the afternoon, but that hardly dampened the spirits of the many young spectators watching the Fly Europe street athletics competition in Paris on Wednesday (13).

Held against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, just hours before it was confirmed that the French capital would host the 2024 Olympic Games, the hosts won the team competition with 41 points, beating Germany and Spain.

German heptathlete Claudia Salman-Rath defied the damp conditions to leap 6.39m in the long jump for a comfortable victory.

French sprinter Jimmy Vicaut won the 35m sprint in 4.35 after clocking 4.26 in the heats earlier in the day. And Kevin Menaldo found that 5.12m was enough to win the pole vault.

“We don’t care that we’ve got wet feet,” commented some of the school pupils who were attending the event. “This is too good! We’ve seen champions!”
