Valerie Adams did what everyone expected and bagged her 44th consecutive win which, coincidently was her second straight World Indoor Championships title.

The Kiwi athlete killed off the competition with her first throw of 20.06m, which was longer than any of the other competitors could manage.

The 29-year-old had five throws over 20 metres, and twice bettered her own world leading result of 20.11m from the qualifiers.

A 20.41m effort in the second round and then the winning distance of 20.67m in round five brought another gold medal to New Zealand.

This is the first time this country has won two medals at a single World Indoor Championships after Tomas Walsh grabbed the bronze in the men’s shot competition on Friday.

Christina Schwanitz, the pre-competition world leader with 20.05m, was second throughout the competition and came close to her best marks.

A 19.69m put from round one secured the silver medal and the 28-year-old German went on to better that with 19.94m in round five.

There was a much tighter fight for the bronze medal between three medallists from recent major championships.

USA’s Michelle Carter, the bronze medallist from the 2012 World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, achieved a season’s best of 19.10m in round two, but could not improve and was overtaken in round four by China’s Gong Lijiao, the world and Olympic bronze medallist.

Gong first came close in round three with a 19.07m effort and then won the bronze medal after unleashing a 19.24m season’s best with her next attempt.

Russia's Yevgeniya Kolodko, the silver medallist from the 2012 Olympic Games, was fourth with a 19.11m result in round six to also overtake Carter.
