Just days after breaking their respective world records in Zurich, Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell return to the track at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels.
Saturday (5), the second evening of action at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, brings down the curtain on another pulsating Diamond League season, with Dos Santos and Russell among the standout track athletes on show.
After winning in Zurich, Dos Santos reflected on the fact that the previous time he had dipped below the 400m hurdles world record, he had finished with bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. This time, he was a class apart, clocking 45.80. His closest challenger in Belgium on times this year, Matheus Lima, is nearly one-and-a-half seconds slower for the distance.
Russell is also in electric form over the barriers. She took 0.03 off the previous world record with her 12.09 in Switzerland and almost immediately turned her attention to becoming the first woman in history to break 12 seconds.
Among those aiming to stop her on Saturday night is the woman she usurped as world record-holder, Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan. Other challengers include world indoor champion Devynne Charlton and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands.
The women’s 800m has proved one of the most eye-catching events on the Diamond League calendar all season long. World leader Audrey Werro will renew her rivalry with Femke Broeders-Bol over two laps of the track.
Werro has been the form athlete at the distance, with the leading contenders pushing each other in pursuit of Jarmila Kratochvílová’s 43-year-old world record. The Swiss athlete has fared best to date, getting to within 0.42 of that mark.
The final night in Brussels gives the Diamond League winners in events contested at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship automatic qualification to the US$10million showdown the following week.

Challengers line up to topple Tebogo

Having already booked his spot in the 200m as the Olympic champion, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo will test himself over that distance in what looks like a rapid field.
Tebogo’s best of 19.84 this season is some way shy of his 19.46 PB, while the fastest man in the world this year is US athlete Kenny Bednarek, who leads the rankings with 19.62. Other threats come from South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile and Makanakaishe Charamba from neighbouring Zimbabwe.
The other sprint event on the night is the women’s 100m, in which Sha’Carri Richardson lines up as the quickest this year with 10.77. She will be joined by European champion Amy Hunt and the dual Jamaican threat of Tina Clayton and Jonielle Smith.
Jessica Hull declared that her time was coming after winning double medals at the World Indoor Championships and rising to No.1 in the world rankings. She is steadily delivering on that threat in the 1500m, but the event looks wide open, with Georgia Hunter Bell, Dorcus Ewoi and Birke Haylom among those racing alongside her.
Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali has made no secret of his desire to break Lamecha Girma’s world record for the 3000m steeplechase and tops a field featuring eight of the world’s top 10.
Marileidy Paulino has shown little to suggest her crown as the world’s best 400m runner is slipping, having broken the Diamond League record with 48.48 to win in Paris at the end of June.
A young pretender is emerging in the form of Czech runner Lurdes Gloria Manuel. The 21-year-old looked sublime when winning the World Indoor Championships in March in Toruń, and later improved her PB to 49.37 when finishing second to Paulino in Paris. But Henriette Jæger, Natalia Bukowiecka and Nickisha Pryce are all ranked higher than Manuel in 2026.
Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew, meanwhile, tops the field for the men’s 5000m, with US duo Grant Fisher and Graham Blanks his biggest rivals on paper.

High jump battle hotting up

The women’s high jump appears to be reaching a crescendo in the latter part of the season. World champion Nicola Olyslagers won the preceding Diamond League meeting in Zurich with 2.02m, just 2cm shy of her PB.
In Heilbronn, Olyslagers’ fellow Australian Eleanor Patterson was then embroiled in a thrilling head-to-head with Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh. Both cleared two metres, but Patterson sealed the win after clearing the height at her first attempt.
Also in the field is another two-metre jumper in Nafi Thiam, though her best this season of 1.84m is some way shy of that.
Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has been enjoying the season of his life in the men’s javelin, the Commonwealth champion winning 11 of his past 12 events. Arguably the most impressive was his career-best 92.62m in Rome, while he also threw 92.07m in Zurich last week.
The men to finish second and third to him respectively in Zurich – Anderson Peters and Dawid Wegner – again aim to topple him a few days on, as does current world champion Keshorn Walcott.
In the women’s javelin, Haruka Kitaguchi may have comfortably booked her place at the Ultimate Championship as Olympic champion, but she is currently bidding to get back to her best with super coach Jan Železný.
She showed good form in winning in Lausanne recently, but all eyes will be on Chinese rising star Yan Ziyi, the 18-year-old whose 71.74m put her second on the all-time list.
Italian Larissa Iapichino is bidding for a hat-trick of Diamond League titles in the long jump, while Belgian fans at the King Baudouin Stadium will be hoping for a strong result from home athlete Noor Vidts.
Iapichino’s fellow Italian Leonardo Fabbri is the form athlete in the men’s shot put with a world-leading 22.74m and a second European title recently picked up in Birmingham. Joe Kovacs, at 37, is still challenging for the biggest honours, as is 34-year-old Kiwi Tom Walsh.
It was in the second round of the triple jump at the European Championships that another Italian, Andy Diaz Hernandez, sailed to 18.15m, comfortably the biggest jump of the year and a lifetime best.
The question is whether he can emulate that leap with Olympic and world champion Pedro Pichardo, Jordan Scott and Yasser Mohammed Triki all lining up against him.
Katie Moon may be world ranked No.1 in the women’s pole vault, but three rivals in her event – Hana Moll, Angelica Moser and Imogen Ayris – have all cleared higher heights than her this season.

World record holders return to track for Diamond League finale

• Day two preview
The Wanda Diamond League season reaches its climax this week with the final at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, where the first set of champions will be crowned on Friday (4) before the remaining disciplines are decided on Saturday.
A win in Brussels for athletes in events contested at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship will guarantee a place in the lucrative inaugural event, where a prize pot of US$10million is up for grabs.
Among the day-one contenders already confirmed for Budapest is Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who has secured a wildcard 1500m call-up and will be hoping to continue his return to form following almost a year out with an Achilles injury.
The Norwegian was crowned European 5000m champion in Birmingham recently, then went on to finish fourth over 1500m in Silesia and fifth in Zurich.
But he faces a stellar line-up including 20-year-old Cameron Myers, who broke the Australian record in winning the Paris Diamond League in 3:28.00, Olympic champion Cole Hocker and 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot.
The day-one action at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme is capped off by the men’s 400m, with 22-year-old world champion Collen Kebinatshipi having enjoyed a stellar season since his first Diamond League win in May.
Since then, he has twice broken the Diamond League record, first with 43.54 and then with 43.44 in Monaco to move to sixth on the world all-time list. The other two runners in the field to duck under 44 seconds this season are Zakithi Nene and Jacory Patterson.
The last women’s action of the night sees Julien Alfred looking to extend her unbeaten streak in the 200m.
She set a career best of 21.51 in Monaco and only two women in the field have come within half a second of that this season: the US duo Kayla White and Cambrea Sturgis. Amy Hunt will also be hoping to get in the mix after her quadruple gold at the European Championships.

US hurdles battle

It was in Brussels back in 2012 that Aries Merritt set the long-standing world record for the 110m hurdles, a mark Ja’Kobe Tharp broke at the NCAA Championships in June. He will have his eyes on lowering that 12.75 mark, but faces a triple threat from his US compatriots on Friday night.
Most notable among his challengers is world champion Cordell Tinch, along with Jamal Britt and Trey Cunningham, all sub-13 men at their peak.
Like Tinch, Oblique Seville has already booked his spot at the Ultimate as the current world champion in the 100m, and he has properly backed up those credentials in 2026. He was crowned national champion in June in a season’s best of 9.82, won the Prefontaine Classic, and also picked up victories in Monaco and Silesia.
He faces a double US challenge from Christian Coleman and Trayvon Bromell, while a strong African contingent — Kanyinsola Ajayi, Emmanuel Eseme, Gift Leotlela and Akani Simbine — have all run 9.93 or quicker this season.
Emmanuel Wanyonyi is peaking at just the right time, having clocked a season’s best of 1:41.76 to win last week’s 800m Diamond League in Zurich. The world 1000m record-holder again faces Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who pushed him so close in Switzerland.
The other sub-1:42 man this season, Canada’s Marco Arop, is also in action in Brussels, along with home favourite Elliot Crestan.
Recently crowned European champion Emma Zapletalová heads the rankings for the women’s 400m hurdles ahead of Anna Cockrell and Rushell Clayton.
Defending Diamond League champion Faith Cherotich, fresh from her 8:55.82 victory in Zurich, looks set to do battle with Peruth Chemutai and Winfred Yavi in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Ethiopian contenders dominate the entries for the 5000m, among them Likina Amebaw, Freweyni Hailu and Senayet Getachew, while home hopes will be on Jana van Lent.

Challengers line up to dethrone Duplantis

Mondo Duplantis faces a star-studded threat to his Diamond League title, with the top four from last year’s World Championships all in action in the Belgian capital.
Kurtis Marschall, a bronze medallist in Tokyo, got the better of Duplantis in Stockholm earlier this season, while Emmanouil Karalis cleared 6.20m in pushing the world No.1 in Zurich recently.
But Duplantis has cleared 6.20m or higher in his three most recent competitions and has had some solid attempts at bettering the 6.31m world record he set indoors in Uppsala at the start of the year.
In the men’s long jump, Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou has marked himself out as the man to beat with a stellar outdoor season to date. He was crowned European champion for the fourth time with a best of 8.44m, but his standout display came at the Greek Championships in July, where he managed three jumps beyond 8.60m.
Those hoping to disrupt his run of good form include Swiss jumper Simon Ehammer, with a personal best of 8.51m set this season, and European indoor champion Bozhidar Sarâboyukov.
The top five in the 2026 rankings will compete in the women’s triple jump, including three women over the 15-metre mark this season: Thea LaFond with 15.25m in Zagreb, Saly Sarr with 15.08m in Silesia and Leyanis Pérez Hernández with 15.06m in Monaco.
Gianmarco Tamberi, fresh from his wildcard call-up for the Ultimate, has been enjoying a renaissance at the age of 34. Plagued by injuries in recent years, he clinched a third successive European title on what was the first birthday of his daughter Camilla. Threats in Brussels are likely to come from JuVaughn Harrison, Oleh Doroshchuk and Romain Beckford.
Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna heads the field for the men’s discus along with European champion Kristjan Čeh of Slovenia and world champion Daniel Ståhl of Sweden, while two-time Olympic champion Valarie Sion is bidding for a sixth successive Diamond League title. Among those aiming to dethrone her are Jorinde van Klinken and Cierra Jackson.
In the other field event to be decided, Chase Jackson of the USA and Dutch athlete Jessica Schilder will be hoping to emulate their 21-metre throws from this season in the women’s shot put. Jackson only joined that elite club last week in Berlin, while Schilder achieved the feat at the start of the outdoor season in China.

Many of the world's best athletes converge on Brussels for two nights of action at the Diamond League Final with automatic qualifying spots for the Ultimate.

Diamond League reaches climax with Ultimate places up for grabs

With the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels just one week away and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship fast approaching, Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell produced the headline performances of an extraordinary night at the Weltklasse meeting in Zurich on Thursday (27).
Dos Santos opened the record-breaking sequence with a stunning 45.80 in the men’s 400m hurdles, and less than 40 minutes later Russell followed with 12.09 in the women’s 100m hurdles, as two world records fell at the final regular-season Wanda Diamond League meeting of the year.
By the end of the evening, Diamond League records, meeting records, world leads and national records had been scattered across the programme, with the women’s 800m and men’s pole vault also edging into world record territory.
Dos Santos, the 2022 world champion, made up the stagger on multiple global champion Karsten Warholm by halfway, then continued to forge ahead. The Brazilian charged through the line in 45.80, taking 0.14 off the world record set by Warholm at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
Warholm finished a distant second in 46.69 – still one of the fastest times in history – but this was Dos Santos’ night, and one of the defining performances of the season.
“The crowd and the energy were perfect,” said Dos Santos. “This night was amazing for me and for everyone who came to watch, and everyone watching from home. I hope Brazil stopped to watch it.
“I have no words to explain what happened other than: I just broke the world record. I have been showing great form throughout the season – that I am fast, that I am strong. We changed a lot in training and racing for this. I’m starting faster, I’m finishing stronger, and that is what I had to do to break a world record.
“I was looking for my coach as soon as I crossed the finish line. I was the one running, but he is the one who made this possible. He believed in me when I was younger and helped me develop as an athlete and as a person.”
Russell then added another world record in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The Olympic champion had already come close to the world record twice this year, and in Zurich she finally took it down. Producing a flawless run over the barriers, Russell stopped the clock at 12.09 to take 0.03 off the previous world record.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, the world record-holder heading into the race, was second in a season’s best of 12.23. European champion Nadine Visser finished third in a season’s best of 12.34.
"My start felt really good," said Russell. "As I was approaching the line, I thought, 'let me actually run through the line this time and see what the time is'. When I saw 12.09, I got so emotional.
"I have dreamed about this moment for so long. This is the best place I ever could have imagined to break the world record. When I heard that Alison dos Santos had broken the world record, it confirmed the track was hot. I got a lot of motivation from him for sure."

World records threatened in 800m and pole vault

The world records remained intact in the women’s 800m and men’s pole vault, but only just. Audrey Werro continued her remarkable season with another Diamond League record in front of her home crowd, while Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis produced one of the highest-quality pole vault contests in history.
Werro won the women’s 800m in 1:53.70, improving her own Diamond League record, world lead and meeting record by 0.10.
This time, Femke Broeders-Bol took a more aggressive approach, tracking the pacemaker through the opening lap before Werro drew closer down the back straight. The Swiss athlete took the lead with 200 metres to go and, despite some slight jostling on the top bend, stretched away down the home straight to claim another superb victory.
Her 1:53.70 brought her another step closer to the world record, while Broeders-Bol was rewarded with a Dutch record of 1:54.71, a 0.70 improvement on the PB she set in Lausanne last week. That performance lifts her to ninth on the world all-time list. World silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell was third in a season’s best of 1:55.03.
The men’s pole vault also soared into rare air, as Duplantis cleared an outdoor world lead of 6.25m and Karalis set a Greek record of 6.20m.
The meeting record had stood at 6.07m, but it was revised several times during a contest that quickly became a duel between history’s two highest vaulters. Both cleared 6.10m, Duplantis then went over 6.15m, Karalis responded with 6.20m, and Duplantis reclaimed the lead with a first-time clearance at 6.25m.
Sondre Guttormsen also cleared 6.00m for third, while Chris Nilsen and Ernest John Obiena both managed 5.90m in a competition of exceptional depth.
Karalis passed at 6.25m, then joined Duplantis in taking aim at a would-be world record height of 6.32m. Neither could clear it, but both had solid attempts, underlining the sense that the event is still being pushed into new territory.

Cockrell and Wolfe break meeting records

Anna Cockrell produced a world-leading meeting record of 52.13 in the women’s 400m hurdles, taking 0.05 off the mark set by Femke Bol in 2025.
Emma Zapletalova, the world leader coming into the race, was level with Cockrell entering the home straight, but clattered the penultimate hurdle and faded to sixth. Former world record-holder Dalilah Muhammad was second in a season’s best of 53.16.
Parker Wolfe took five seconds off Said Aouita’s long-standing men’s 3000m meeting record, winning in 7:27.43. The previous mark had stood since 1986, but Wolfe led a US one-two as Graham Blanks finished second in 7:27.92. Australia’s Cameron Myers was third in 7:27.97, with seven men dipping under 7:30.

Wanyonyi and Bednarek set world leads

There was a similarly close battle in the men’s 800m, where Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi held off a strong challenge from Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati.
Wanyonyi won in a world-leading 1:41.76, with Sedjati close behind in a season’s best of 1:41.83.
Kenny Bednarek looked a class apart in the men’s 200m, striding clear to victory in a world-leading 19.62. The US sprinter finished just 0.05 shy of his PB and 0.20 ahead of South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile.
A photo-finish was needed to separate Olympic champion Julien Alfred and world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden in the women’s 100m, both clocking 10.70 as Alfred took victory by five thousandths of a second in a national record. It was just the second time in history that two women had run 10.70 or faster in the same race.
The women’s 3000m steeplechase meeting record came under threat as world champion Faith Cherotich led a Kenyan one-two from Doris Lemngole, winning by 0.12 in 8:55.82. Peruth Chemutai also finished inside nine minutes, clocking 8:58.28.
In the men’s javelin, Sri Lanka’s world leader Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage came within 21 centimetres of the meeting record that has stood for 30 years.
Two-time world champion Anderson Peters led after the opening round with 86.93m, but Pathirage moved into the lead with 88.23m in round two and extended his advantage in round three. He then went farther again in the final round, launching the javelin 92.07m.

Moll, Olyslagers, Geist and Tentoglou among field event winners

In the women’s pole vault, held on the eve of the meeting in the city centre, Hana Moll cleared a PB of 4.90m to take victory. Switzerland’s Angelica Moser was second with a season’s best of 4.85m.
Nicola Olyslagers won a high-quality women’s high jump with a season’s best of 2.02m. Iryna Gerashchenko cleared an equal PB of 2.00m for second, while world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh was equal fourth with 1.96m.
Elsewhere, Jordan Geist set a PB of 22.53m to win the men’s shot put from Rajindra Campbell, who reached 22.22m.
Miltiadis Tentoglou won a superb men’s long jump contest with 8.45m, just ahead of Tajay Gayle, who jumped 8.43m. Wayne Pinnock was third with 8.33m and Jorge Hodelin fourth with 8.32m.
Cole Hocker produced a well-timed finish to win a competitive men’s 1500m in 3:31.71. Kenyan youngster Phanuel Koech was second in 3:31.84, while Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished fifth in 3:32.16.
The night’s standout events – Dos Santos’ 400m hurdles world record, Russell’s 100m hurdles world record, Werro’s 800m Diamond League record and the Duplantis-Karalis pole vault duel – gave Zurich the feel of a championship final in miniature. With the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels next week and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship on the horizon, they also offered a tantalising glimpse of the contests still to come.

Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell produced the headline performances of an extraordinary night at the Weltklasse meeting

Dos Santos and Russell break world records in unforgettable Zurich

Global champions will clash at the Weltklasse Zürich – the last Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season ahead of the series final in Brussels next month.
The competition kicks off with the women’s pole vault city event at Zurich Main Station on Wednesday (26) before the main meeting at the Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday (27).
Many athletes have already secured their spots for the Diamond League Final, but others will seek precious points in Zurich in a bid to qualify. Once in Brussels there is more at stake – a win at the Diamond League Final also secures guaranteed entry for events contested at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, making Brussels the last opportunity for athletes to book their place in Budapest automatically.
Swiss star Audrey Werro faces Femke Broeders-Bol in an 800m rematch that pits them against Georgia Hunter Bell. Werro, the Diamond League champion in 2025, has won four Diamond League races so far this season, those performances topped by her 1:53.98 in Stockholm and 1:53.80 in Paris – times that place her third on the world all-time list.
Dutch world 400m hurdles champion Broeders-Bol ran her close in Lausanne, however, and now they return to race on Werro's home soil again, this time against Great Britain’s world silver medallist Hunter Bell who contests her first Diamond League 800m of the season after 1500m wins in Rome and Paris.
Olympic and world 1500m medallist Jess Hull, Sarah Billings and 18-year-old Saida Tsehaye, who finished third behind Werro and Broeders-Bol in Lausanne, add further strength to the field.
In the men’s 1500m, USA’s Ethan Strand will look to maintain his momentum after beating world U20 record-holder Phanuel Koech, Olympic champion Cole Hocker and two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, continuing his comeback, in Silesia on Sunday. They all race again in Zurich.

Rivalries renewed

Zurich is the third Diamond League meeting within a week and many other rivalries will be renewed at the Letzigrund Stadium. Brazil’s 2022 world champion Alison dos Santos beat Norway’s world record-holder Karsten Warholm for the fourth time this season in Silesia, the pair clocking two of the three fastest 400m hurdles times of the season – and two of the fastest performances of all time – and they go head-to-head again.
World champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden pipped Olympic champion Julien Alfred in the 100m in Silesia – 10.78 to 10.83 – and they will want to put on another show in Zurich where they will again face 2023 world champion Sha'Carri Richardson and world silver medallist Tina Clayton as well as world 200m silver medallist Amy Hunt.
USA’s Olympic champion Masai Russell will aim to maintain her season-long win streak in the 100m hurdles – a season that includes a 12.14 performance in Xiamen in May, a mark just 0.02 off the world record. She faces world record-holder Tobi Amusan, Alaysha Johnson, Nadine Visser and home favourite Ditaji Kambundji.
World bronze medallist Emma Zapletalová is another athlete looking to extend her hurdles dominance as she goes for a sixth Diamond League win of the year in the 400m hurdles, against Dalilah Muhammad and Anna Cockrell.
Two-time Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek, the winner in Rabat and Stockholm, goes in the 200m against Sinesipho Dambile who is aiming for a second Diamond League win of the season.
World champion Faith Cherotich will want to rebound in the 3000m steeplechase after finishing second behind Olympic champion Winfred Yavi in Lausanne. Yavi doesn’t race in Zurich but Peruth Chemutai, who won against Cherotich in Shaoxing/Keqiao and Xiamen, does return to action.
Parker Wolfe, Nico Young and Graham Blanks race the 3000m after finishing in the top four in the Lausanne 5000m. They take on Cameron Myers and Grant Fisher.
The men’s 800m is not a Diamond League event in Zurich but it still features Olympic and world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi who won in Lausanne after breaking the world 1000m record in Monaco.

Duplantis and Karalis aim high again

After winning the pole vault in Lausanne and Silesia with respective clearances of 6.21m and 6.20m and attempting world records at both, Mondo Duplantis will look to raise the bar again in Zurich. The contest in Lausanne was historic as Emmanouil Karalis soared 6.16m and they both vault again in the non-Diamond League contest.
The women’s Diamond League city event on Wednesday features home star Angelica Moser, global gold medallists Katie Moon and Sandi Morris, and Hana Moll who cleared 4.84m to win in Lausanne.
Miltiádis Tentóglou, who soared 8.66m at the Greek Championships, leads the long jump field but faces strong competition in Bozhidar Sarâboyukov, world U20 record-holder Jorge A. Hodelín and Simon Ehammer, competing in front of a home crowd.
Sri Lanka’s world javelin leader Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage looks to add another win to his victories in Rome, Doha and Lausanne, while another world leader, Leonardo Fabbri, faces Joe Kovacs and Tom Walsh in the shot put.
The leading eight athletes on this season’s top list clash in the high jump, world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh looking to build on her recent wins at the Silesia Diamond League and European Championships. She again goes up against Nicola Olyslagers, Eleanor Patterson, Yuliia Levchenko, Iryna Gerashchenko, Angelina Topić, Marija Vuković and Maria Żodzik.

Global champions will clash at the Weltklasse Zürich – the last Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season ahead of the series final in Brussels next month.

Star showdowns as road to Diamond League Final goes via Zurich

World record-holder Mykolas Alekna threw a Diamond League record in a dominant discus display, while Alison dos Santos, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Collen Kebinatshipi won a series of key clashes during the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia on Sunday (23).
Lithuania’s Alekna improved on his own Diamond League record of 71.70m set in London last year, launching the implement 72.58m to secure a statement win over global gold medallists Kristjan Čeh and Daniel Ståhl. All four of Alekna’s valid throws surpassed 71 metres, his record-breaking 72.58m coming in the fifth round. Čeh placed second with 68.93m, while Ståhl was third with 68.25m.
Mondo Duplantis was also among the world record-holders to triumph in Silesia. Back at the scene of the 10th of his now 15 world pole vault records – 6.26m in 2024 – the Swedish star cleared 6.20m to win the non-Diamond League contest, three days on from his 6.21m clearance to win in Lausanne.
His route to victory was not quite so smooth this time, as the multiple Olympic and world champion required two attempts at his opening height of 5.65m, 5.90m and 6.10m, but he clinched the win when he cleared 6.20m on his first try.
To the sounds of his latest song ‘Gold’, the Ultimate Anthem for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship taking place in Budapest on 11-13 September, Duplantis prepared to attempt a world record height of 6.32m but called it a day after one try at that bar. Emmanouil Karalis, who cleared 6.16m in Lausanne, attempted 6.20m but finished joint second with Sondre Guttormsen as they both managed a best of 6.00m.

Dos Santos sets world lead, Kebinatshipi wins 400m

Alison dos Santos improved his own world lead to win the 400m hurdles, the 2022 world champion beating world record-holder Karsten Warholm for the fourth time this season – 46.43 to 46.52. In a clash between two of the three quickest 400m hurdlers of all time, Dos Santos needed to produce the sixth-fastest performance in history to triumph, while Warholm’s 46.52 matched the 11th-fastest run of all time. Only Dos Santos, Warholm and Rai Benjamin have ever gone quicker. Matheus Lima finished third in a PB of 47.26.

Benjamin was in 400m action in Silesia and he finished second in a PB behind world champion Collen Kebinatshipi, who ran a meeting record of 43.59. That secured Kebinatshipi a fifth Diamond League win of a season in which he has twice improved the Diamond League record.
Benjamin, the Olympic and world champion in the 400m hurdles, put up a strong challenge and finished second in 43.83 – his first time under 44 seconds. After the race he shared an update on social media indicating that he intends to attempt a 400m and 400m hurdles double at the Ultimate Championship next month.

Paulino, Jefferson-Wooden and Seville top sprints

Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino dominated the 400m in trademark style, powering past her rivals off the final bend to win in 48.87. That secured her a fifth Diamond League win of the season with a sixth run under 49 seconds this year – a record number of sub-49.00 performances in a single season. Nickisha Pryce was second in 49.49.
World champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden prevailed in a clash against Olympic champion Julien Alfred in the 100m, maintaining her win streak over the distance by equalling her season’s best of 10.78 (0.6m/s) ahead of Alfred in a season’s best of 10.83. Sha'Carri Richardson, the 2023 world champion, was third in 10.96.
World champion Oblique Seville won a hugely competitive men’s 100m in a meeting record of 9.83 (1.4m/s) to deny Kenny Bednarek who was second in 9.87. They had earlier won their heats in 9.90 and 10.03, respectively. All nine athletes in the final broke 10 seconds – a record for depth.
World record-holder Ja'Kobe Tharp rebounded after hitting a hurdle in Lausanne and jogging over the finish line in eighth place, winning the 110m hurdles in Silesia in 13.05 (-0.7m/s) ahead of Trey Cunningham (13.08) and Jamal Britt (13.09), who won in Lausanne.
Olympic 800m silver medallist Tsige Duguma impressed in only the fourth 1500m race of her career, running a world-leading PB of 3:55.06 after a storming finish to beat Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull (3:55.20) and world silver medallist Dorcus Ewoi (3:55.58). Klaudia Kazimierska was rewarded for her front-running efforts as she finished fourth in a Polish record of 3:55.59.

Ethan Strand got the better of world U20 record-holder Phanuel Koech, Olympic champion Cole Hocker and two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m. Strand attacked from some way back, kicking to victory in 3:30.77 ahead of Koech in 3:31.14, Hocker in 3:31.16 and Ingebrigtsen – returning to Diamond League competition for the first time since September 2024 following injury – in 3:31.19.
African champion Gemechu Godana surprised two-time world and Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali, handing him a first Diamond League 3000m steeplechase defeat of the year. The 20-year-old Godana clocked a PB and meeting record of 8:02.74 ahead of runner-up El Bakkali in 8:04.61.
Nadia Battocletti followed her recent European double title win by getting her first Diamond League victory, clocking 14:54.09 to take the 5000m ahead of Freweyni Hailu (14:54.62).

Sarr joins 15-metre club

Senegal’s world indoor triple jump bronze medallist Saly Sarr broke the 22-year-old national record, soaring 15.08m to surpass 15 metres for the first time. She backed that up with another 15.00m leap and clinched her first Diamond League win ahead of world champion Leyanis Pérez Hernández (14.91m).
World record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh matched her own meeting record by clearing 2.00m to win the high jump ahead of her Ukrainian compatriot Iryna Gerashchenko (1.98m).
Canada’s Olympic and world champions Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers won the non-Diamond League hammer contests, respectively throwing 82.92m and 77.09m. In other non-Diamond League action, Leonardo Fabbri won the shot put (22.08m) and Alaysha Johnson the 100m hurdles (12.52).
A series of field events kicked off the action during a city competition on the eve of the main meeting on Saturday (22).
Alyssa Jones and Agate de Sousa both leapt a meeting record of 6.98m to top the long jump, Jones taking the win on countback. In a close contest, Monae’ Nichols was third (6.95m) and Jazmin Sawyers fourth (6.84m).
Gianmarco Tamberi won the high jump with a clearance of 2.31m, while Chase Jackson threw a meeting record and season’s best of 20.92m to win the non-Diamond League shot put ahead of Jessica Schilder (20.20m). Schilder is the only athlete to have thrown farther than Jackson’s 20.92m this year.

Alekna throws Diamond League record, Dos Santos and Jefferson-Wooden win key clashes in Silesia

Mondo Duplantis cleared 6.21m to win a historic pole vault contest against Emmanouil Karalis who soared 6.16m during the Wanda Diamond League city event in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday (20).
Sweden’s Duplantis improved his own meeting record of 6.15m and had no failures on his way to his latest record-breaking performance, but Greece’s Karalis offered him a strong challenge as he managed 6.16m – the second-best clearance of his career behind the 6.17m that places him second on the world all-time list behind Duplantis.
Only Duplantis himself has ever gone higher than his 6.21m in Lausanne and the two-time Olympic champion went on to attempt 6.32m – a mark that would have added another centimetre to his world record set in Uppsala in March – but he decided to call it a day after two tries at that height.
"I'm tired! But I feel really good, I feel really happy," said Duplantis. "That was such an amazing competition, everybody jumped so well, so I felt like I really had to step it up. I'm glad I jumped really well.
"That’s competition, that’s what we live for. I love to compete, I love competing against Manolo, especially when he is on his A-game like this. I just like to jump high. That's what I feel like I was made to do."
Competing in the city event held on the shores of Lake Geneva on the eve of the main Athletissima meeting, Duplantis and Karalis were still locked in battle as the bar reached 6.01m – both athletes having perfect scorecards up to that height. They both then passed at 6.11m.
Karalis, the world silver and Olympic bronze medallist, failed his first attempt at 6.16m and Duplantis soared into the lead as he managed it on his first try, adding a centimetre to his own meeting record from 2024. But Karalis responded by matching that new meeting record on his second attempt, clearing a height that only three athletes in history – Duplantis, Karalis and former world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie – have ever managed.
The bar went up to 6.21m, which Duplantis again cleared first time. Karalis had two attempts at that height before saving his last attempt for 6.26m and Duplantis was confirmed the winner when that was unsuccessful. Duplantis then had two attempts at 6.32m.
The epic pole vault competition saw three other athletes clear 5.91m – Kurtis Marschall finishing third, Sondre Guttormsen fourth and Chris Nilsen fifth on countback.
"It's been amazing. I always love competing here," said Karalis, who added 10 centimetres to the previous best ever non-winning mark. "Everyone jumped very well. It's always nice to put on a good show."

Werro and Benjamin set meeting records in stadium

Home star Audrey Werro was among the meeting record-breakers as attention turned to the main Athletissima meeting at the Pontaise Olympic Stadium on Friday (21).
The Swiss 22-year-old, who won the Diamond League title in Zürich last year, controlled the 800m race but faced a strong late surge by Femke Broeders-Bol. Werro won in 1:55.33 ahead of Broeders-Bol in 1:55.41, the latter a Dutch record that improved the 1:55.54 achieved by Ellen van Langen when winning the Olympic title in Barcelona in 1992 – a time that Broeders-Bol matched when finishing third at the recent European Championships behind Werro.
Werro stayed a few strides back as the pacemaker went off hard, passing halfway in 55.3. Ethiopia’s Saida Tsehaye moved up between Werro and Broeders-Bol but Broeders-Bol charged down the home straight, almost catching Werro at the line. Tsehaye was third in a PB of 1:56.92. Werro and Broeders-Bol next meet at the Diamond League meeting in Zürich, where they will be joined in a stacked field by Keely Hodgkinson, Georgia Hunter Bell and Lilian Odira.

Olympic and world champion Rai Benjamin returned to the 400m hurdles like he had never left, winning the non-Diamond League race in 46.67 – the fourth-fastest time of the season – to break a meeting record set by Edwin Moses in 1981. Benjamin turns his attention back to the 400m flat – his focus for the season so far – in Silesia on Sunday.
USA’s Olympic champion Masai Russell maintained her win streak in the 100m hurdles, backing up her Diamond League victories in Monaco, Eugene, Xiamen and Shaoxing/Keqiao with another meeting record-breaking performance. She clocked 12.27 this time to beat Nadine Visser (12.42) and Alaysha Johnson (12.49).
Another meeting record fell in the 3000m steeplechase as Olympic champion Winfred Yavi ran a well-judged race, clocking 9:00.04 to easily hold off world champion Faith Cherotich who secured second place in 9:01.90. Marwa Bouzayani was third in 9:05.55.

Wanyonyi wins 800m battle

Kenya’s Olympic and world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi won his first Diamond League 800m of the year, chasing down the fast-starting Marco Arop and holding off the fast-finishing Djamel Sedjati to triumph in 1:42.19.
Canada’s world leader and 2023 world champion Arop set off with intent, following the pacemaker as the 400-metre mark was reached in 48.86. Arop took over as the pacer stepped aside but he couldn’t hold on and was passed by Wanyonyi, Brandon Miller and Sedjati down the home straight. Wanyonyi followed his world 1000m record in Monaco to get a second Diamond League win of the year, followed by Sedjati in 1:42.31, Miller in 1:42.55 and Arop in 1:43.18.
Emma Zapletalová strode to her fifth Diamond League 400m hurdles win of the year, clocking 52.41 for the second-fastest time in the world this season behind her own world lead of 52.30 set in Doha. Anna Cockrell was second in 53.15 and Paulien Couckuyt was third in a Belgian record of 53.28.
Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo showed his strength in the final Diamond League track event of the evening, winning the 200m in 19.87 (-0.3m/s) ahead of Sinesipho Dambile (19.98).
There was a career-first Diamond League win for USA’s Kayla White in the women’s 200m. The world 4x100m champion finished clear ahead of world silver medallist Amy Hunt and Olympic finalist Favour Ofili, clocking 22.18 (0.3m/s) to their shared time of 22.32. There was disappointment for two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson as she pulled up off the bend and finished her race laid on the track.
The 110m hurdles was not a Diamond discipline but USA’s Jamal Britt still put on a show, winning in 13.13 (-0.5m/s) ahead of Kendry L. Menéndez in 13.20. World record-holder Ja'Kobe Tharp hit a barrier and jogged over the finish line in eighth.
Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew kicked to victory in the 5000m, leading the top six under 13 minutes to win in 12:57.55 – his fourth consecutive race under that 13-minute barrier. Parker Wolfe was second in 12:58.20 and Nico Young was third in 12:58.33.

Pathirage pips Chopra in javelin clash

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and India’s Neeraj Chopra both surpassed 88 metres in the javelin, world leader Pathirage winning with his third-round 88.14m to beat Chopra’s season’s best of 88.05m from the second round.
Japan’s Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi clinched her first Diamond League win of the year in the women’s event, throwing a season’s best of 64.90m to beat Flor Denis Ruiz Hurtado with 64.29m.
USA’s 2022 world U20 champion Hana Moll denied two-time world indoor medallist Angelica Moser a pole vault win on home soil, soaring 4.84m on her final attempt to get her first Diamond League triumph ahead of Moser who managed 4.74m. Olympic champion Nina Kennedy warmed up in Lausanne but withdrew ahead of the competition.
Olympic champion Miltiádis Tentóglou beat another home favourite in the long jump, leaping a wind-aided 8.24m (2.1m/s) to secure top spot ahead of Simon Ehammer with a best of 8.13m.
Pedro Pichardo won the triple jump by a single centimetre. The world champion soared 17.44m into a headwind in the second round and that remained enough to win – just – as Yasser Mohammed Triki responded with a wind-assisted 17.43m (2.7m/s) in the final round. Andy Díaz Hernández, who jumped 18.15m to beat Pichardo at the recent European Championships, was third this time with a 17.20m leap.

Mondo Duplantis cleared 6.21m to win a historic pole vault contest against Emmanouil Karalis, while Audrey Werro pipped Femke Broeders-Bol in a brilliant 800m battle

Duplantis clears 6.21m, Karalis 6.16m in historic pole vault contest in Lausanne

Julien Alfred meeting Melissa Jefferson-Wooden in the 100m, Karsten Warholm racing Alison dos Santos in the 400m hurdles, and Nicola Olyslagers facing Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the high jump are among the many top-class clashes expected at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia on Sunday (23).
Numerous world record-holders are in action at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, Warholm and Mahuchikh joined by Mondo Duplantis, Ja'Kobe Tharp and Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who returns to Diamond League action for the first time in almost two years.
With places at the Diamond League Final in Brussels on the line, and spots at the inaugural Ultimate Championship up for grabs for the winners of those events in Brussels, athletes will want to make their mark when they return to the Silesian Stadium.
The women’s 100m stars the Olympic champion against the world champion as Alfred and Jefferson-Wooden clash over the distance for the first time since last year’s world final.
Saint Lucia’s Olympic champion Alfred is unbeaten this season, while USA’s treble 2025 world champion Jefferson-Wooden has lost only once – to Alfred over 200m in Rome. Jefferson-Wooden won last year in Silesia, equalling the meeting record of 10.66.
But it may not be just a two-way battle as they form part of a formidable field along with 2023 world champion Sha'Carri Richardson, two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson, world silver medallist Tina Clayton, last year’s runner-up Tia Clayton and home favourite Ewa Swoboda.
The men’s race also features the world champion as Jamaica’s Oblique Seville goes for his second Diamond League win of the season. He was second to Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi in both London and Eugene and Ajayi is also among the entries for an event that features heats before the final. They will be joined by the in-form Emmanuel Eseme, Akani Simbine, Jordan Anthony and Kenny Bednarek.
With Olympic and world 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin racing the flat 400m in Silesia, up against world champion Collen Kebinatshipi, the hurdles offers another head-to-head battle between Norway’s world record-holder Warholm and Brazil’s 2022 world champion Dos Santos. Dos Santos is the world leader with 46.48 and has beaten Warholm in their three clashes so far this season but Warholm won in London in 46.61. In the 400m, Kebinatshipi will be looking to put down another strong marker after his Diamond League records in Paris and Monaco, 43.44 at the latter.
Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino leads the entries for the women’s 400m in which she will face home star Natalia Bukowiecka. Paulino is unbeaten this year, her wins including at the Diamond League meetings in Doha, Monaco, London and Paris – the latter in a Diamond League record and world lead of 48.48.
Tharp, who improved the world record to 12.75 in Eugene in June, stars in the 110m hurdles against world champion Cordell Tinch and their US compatriots Jamal Britt and Trey Cunningham. The 100m hurdles is not a Diamond discipline but it still offers a strong field as home favourite Pia Skrzyszowska races Alaysha Johnson, Danielle Williams and Megan Simmonds.

Ingebrigtsen back at scene of world record

Norway’s two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen heads back to the track on which he broke the world 3000m record in 2024, returning to Diamond League competition for the first time since September of that year following injury.
He contests the 1500m this time, a couple of weeks on from his European 5000m title win in Birmingham – his first race since the world final in Tokyo last year. This time his rivals include Olympic champion Cole Hocker, world champion Isaac Nader and 2022 world champion Jake Wightman.
Also in 1500m action, world silver medallist Dorcus Ewoi takes on world leader Birke Haylom, Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull, Olympic 800m silver medallist Tsige Duguma, Nikki Hiltz and Klaudia Kazimierska.
World leader Likina Amebaw, who won in Rome in a PB of 14:18.41, will renew her rivalry with her Ethiopian compatriot Medina Eisa, who beat her in Doha, in a 5000m that features double world medallist Nadia Battocletti, fresh off a European double title win.
Two-time world and Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali goes in the 3000m steeplechase against world bronze medallist Edmund Serem, El Bakkali looking to extend his win streak this season to four Diamond League races.

Duplantis aims high, Mahuchikh faces Olyslagers

Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis of Greece had a brilliant pole vault battle in Lausanne on Thursday, respectively clearing 6.21m and 6.16m, and they meet again in the non-Diamond League contest in Silesia. The Kamila Skolimowska Memorial is where Duplantis set the 10th of his now 15 world records – 6.26m in 2024.
The leading eight high jumpers in the world this year feature in an entry list topped by Ukraine’s world record-holder and Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Australia’s world champion Nicola Olyslagers. They face Eleanor Patterson, who beat Olyslagers to the Commonwealth title, plus Angelina Topić and Yuliia Levchenko.
Another world record-holder is in action in the discus as Mykolas Alekna takes on world leader Matthew Denny, who sits second on the world all-time list, as well as global gold medallists Kristjan Čeh, Daniel Ståhl and Rojé Stona.
In the triple jump, world leader and Olympic champion Thea LaFond, who has jumped 15.25m this year, competes against Davisleydi Velazco, who has jumped 15.13m, as well as world champion Leyanis Pérez Hernández, another 15-metre-plus athlete this year.
The world leaders in the shot put and hammer all compete in the non-Diamond League contests in Silesia. Leonardo Fabbri goes up against Tom Walsh and Joe Kovacs in the men’s shot put, while the hammer battles star Olympic and world champion Camryn Rogers against DeAnna Price and Bence Halász against Ethan Katzberg.
A series of field events kick off the action on the eve of the main meeting. On Saturday, Gianmarco Tamberi faces Oleh Doroshchuk, JuVaughn Harrison, Woo Sanghyeok and Mutaz Barshim in the high jump.
Alyssa Jones, Malaika Mihambo and Agate de Sousa, who have all jumped seven metres this year, meet in the long jump, while the non-Diamond League women’s shot put stars the three top-ranked athletes in the world: Jessica Schilder, Chase Jackson and Sarah Mitton.

Julien Alfred meeting Melissa Jefferson-Wooden in the 100m, Karsten Warholm racing Alison dos Santos in the 400m hurdles, and Nicola Olyslagers facing Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the high jump are among the many top-class clashes expected at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia

Jefferson-Wooden and Alfred in 100m clash, Ingebrigtsen returns in Silesia

Audrey Werro, Mondo Duplantis, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Masai Russell will be among the stars in action when the Wanda Diamond League resumes in Lausanne this week.
World pole vault record-holder Duplantis headlines the city event on the shores of Lake Geneva on Thursday (20) before the main Athletissima meeting at the Pontaise Olympic Stadium on Friday (21).
Sweden’s Duplantis makes his eighth appearance in Lausanne, fresh off clearing a championship record of 6.15m to win his fourth successive European pole vault title in Birmingham. That height also stands as the Athletissima record, set by Duplantis in 2024. He will again be challenged by Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis, who added European silver to his major medal collection on Sunday, and Australia’s Kurtis Marschall, who handed Duplantis his first defeat in almost three years in Stockholm in June.
It was also in Stockholm that Swiss star Werro ran 1:53.98 to move to third on the world 800m all-time list. She strengthened that position by clocking 1:53.80 in Paris later that month and most recently beat Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol to the European title in Birmingham.
Werro and Broeders-Bol clash again in Lausanne and this time they face Kenya’s world champion Lilian Odira, winner at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene.
Beyond victory in Lausanne, athletes will be competing for places at the Diamond League Final in Brussels where Werro will want to retain her Diamond League title. A win in Brussels also secures guaranteed entry for events contested at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, making the Diamond League Final the last opportunity for athletes to book their place in Budapest automatically.
The men’s 800m sees Kenya’s Olympic and world champion Wanyonyi return to the scene of his 1:41.11 from 2024 – a performance that places him joint second on the world all-time list. He goes on the hunt for his first Diamond League 800m win of the year, following the world 1000m record of 2:11.83 he set in Monaco last month. His competition includes Canada’s world leader Marco Arop, who won at the Paris Diamond League in 1:41.84, and USA’s Brandon Miller, the winner of the London Diamond League.

Díaz set to soar

Italy’s Andy Díaz Hernández soared to fourth on the world triple jump all-time list at the European Championships and the world indoor champion will want to maintain the momentum in Lausanne as he competes for the first time since that 18.15m leap.
Portugal’s world champion Pedro Pichardo was runner-up in that high-quality contest, while Díaz’s compatriot Andrea Dallavalle was third and they all compete again, up against Jamaica’s Jordan Scott who beat Díaz during the Diamond League in Oslo. Christian Taylor’s meeting record, set in 2015, stands at 18.06m.
The top three in the European long jump final also renew their rivalry as Olympic champion Miltiádis Tentóglou again meets Swiss favourite Simon Ehammer and Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Sarâboyukov.
Another home star goes in the pole vault as two-time world indoor medallist Angelica Moser returns to action after winning European gold with a 4.80m clearance. Finland’s Wilma Heltelä secured European silver behind her and in Lausanne they face multiple global champions Nina Kennedy and Katie Moon.
Two athletes who have surpassed 90 metres this season – Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and Germany’s Julian Weber – will clash in a javelin contest that also brings together the winners of the past four world titles: Keshorn Walcott, Neeraj Chopra and Anderson Peters.
The women’s event features Colombia’s Flor Denis Ruiz Hurtado who improved her own South American record to 67.34m to retain her title at the Central American and Caribbean Games earlier this month. She competes for her first Diamond League win of the year against Sigrid Borge, who threw 65.00m to finish second in Xiamen, and Adriana Vilagoš, the runner-up in Paris, as well as Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi.

Sprint showdowns

The 100m hurdles stars a clash between the Olympic champion and the world champion as USA’s Masai Russell goes up against home star Ditaji Kambundji. Russell is unbeaten in the 100m hurdles this year and she ran 12.14 in Xiamen in May – a performance just 0.02 off the world record. Adding further strength to the field are Monaco runner-up Alaysha Johnson, Nadine Visser and Pia Skrzyszowska.
The 110m hurdles is not a Diamond discipline in Lausanne but it still features a formidable field led by USA’s world record-holder Ja'Kobe Tharp.
The men’s 200m is the final Diamond discipline on the programme and it brings together Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo, Puerto Rico’s José Figueroa and South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who have all broken 19.85 this season.
Jamaica’s two-time world 200m champion Shericka Jackson takes on Favour Ofili, Kayla White and Amy Hunt in the women’s race, Jackson looking to add to her two Diamond League victories this year in China. Hunt returns to Diamond League action after winning a record four gold medals at the European Championships.
Emma Zapletalová goes for her fifth Diamond League win this year in the 400m hurdles, while the men’s non-Diamond League event includes Olympic and world champion Rai Benjamin in what looks to be his sole hurdles outing in a season in which he is focused on the 400m. His most recent race was the London Diamond League 400m, which he won in a PB of 44.05.
Olympic champion Winfred Yavi goes up against world champion Faith Cherotich in the 3000m steeplechase, both athletes having clocked 8:51 this season. Switzerland’s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu will target back-to-back Diamond League wins following his 5000m victory in Monaco but will line up after a busy week at the European Championships where he contested the 5000m and 10,000m, getting silver in the latter. He faces Birhanu Balew, Parker Wolfe and Grant Fisher.

Audrey Werro, Mondo Duplantis, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Masai Russell will be among the stars in action when the Wanda Diamond League resumes in Lausanne this week.

Star clashes to light up Lausanne as Diamond League resumes

Great Britain’s Josh Kerr achieved his much-publicised aim of breaking the long-standing world mile record with a stunning 3:42.66* run at the Novuna London Athletics Meet – this season’s 11th Wanda Diamond League meeting – on Saturday (18).
Kerr added his name to the pantheon of world record-holders after attacking the mark in the Emsley Carr Mile as part of ‘Project 222’ – the number of seconds he hoped to complete the distance in to improve on the world record set by Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome in 1999.
And he did so – the 2023 world 1500m champion, two-time Olympic medallist and two-time world indoor champion becoming the first athlete to break 3:43, improving on El Guerrouj’s 3:43.13 set 27 years ago.
Kerr was paced by his training partner Brannon Kidder and Žan Rudolf, and Kidder hit 400m on world record tempo in 54.75, Kerr a few strides back in 55.3. Kidder led through 800m, which Kerr reached in 1:51.1, before the pacemakers stepped aside and Kerr took over to pass 1200m in 2:46.39, roared on by the 60,000-strong London Stadium crowd. Kerr then hit 1500m in 3:27.62 – faster than his own British record for the distance – and the world record looked within reach.
Months of preparation had led to that point and Kerr dug deep to hit the finish line in 3:42.66, taking 0.47 off El Guerrouj’s record. The 28-year-old had been tracked by USA’s Yared Nuguse earlier in the race but Nuguse couldn’t stick with the closing pace and finished second in 3:45.69. Great Britain’s Jake Heyward was third in a PB of 3:46.73 and Robert Farken finished fourth in a German record of 3:46.82.
“It is very overwhelming. There was a lot of hype,” said Kerr. “I am surrounded by amazing people, so I have continued to put the work in and I knew I had a 3:42 in me. I nearly lost it there at the end, but I got over the line.
“Out there, I am just the body, but there is an incredible amount of work behind the scenes. Today is a result of all that hard work. The last lap was incredible. I was deaf in the last 110 metres.”
Kerr’s run was among a number of record-breaking performances in London. Cierra Jackson set a Diamond League record with a final throw thriller in the discus, while meeting records were set by Karsten Warholm in the 400m hurdles, Julien Alfred in the 200m and Ja'Kobe Tharp in the 110m hurdles.

Jackson throws 71.72m

USA’s Cierra Jackson improved her PB by almost four metres to win the discus with her final throw of 71.72m – a mark that added 34 centimetres to the Diamond League record set by Sandra Elkasević in Doha in 2018.
Jackson was in third place heading into the last round of a competition led by world and Olympic champion Valarie Sion with 68.39m from the third round. But Jackson, who won the NCAA title last year, saved her best for last and launched the implement 71.72m to win ahead of Sion and Jorinde van Klinken with 67.99m.
"I was super nervous going into that throw," said Jackson. "I couldn't feel my hands, my stomach was hurting. I just took a deep breath and threw and I watched it fly. I was like, 'oh my god', and then I saw the mark and I could not breathe."

Meeting records for Warholm, Alfred and Tharp

Norway’s world record-holder Karsten Warholm stormed to the fastest 400m hurdles in the world this year, improving his own meeting record to 46.61 to clinch a clear victory. Back at the scene of the first of his three world title wins in 2017, Warholm ensured the Diamond League track action started in style as he got his first hurdles race win of the season. Emil Agyekum was second in a German record of 47.45.
Saint Lucia’s Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred was also delighted with her performance on her return to London as she won a 200m clash against USA’s Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas – 21.66 to 21.81 (0.1m/s). It was Alfred’s third win in nine days after her 21.51 at the Diamond League in Monaco that moved her to third on the world 200m all-time list and her 10.87 100m win in Budapest on Tuesday. Shaunae Miller-Uibo was third in London in 22.24.
USA’s world 110m hurdles record-holder Ja'Kobe Tharp dipped under 13 seconds for the fifth time this season, maintaining his magnificent run of form with a meeting record of 12.89 (0.3m/s). The 20-year-old is the first athlete in history to go sub-13 seconds in five consecutive 110m hurdles races.
Tharp set his world record of 12.75 during last month’s NCAA Championships semifinals and followed that with 12.90 in the final. He then ran 12.91 when finishing runner-up at the Eugene Diamond League before returning to winning ways with 12.85 in Budapest on Tuesday. His run in London improves a meeting record that was set by former world record-holder Aries Merritt in 2012 and it saw Tharp win clear ahead of Kendry L. Menéndez in a PB of 13.01. Trey Cunningham was third in 13.12.
NCAA champion Kanyinsola Ajayi beat world champion Oblique Seville for the second time this season – 9.84 to 9.87 (-0.7m/s) – as Ajayi matched his time from the Prefontaine Classic to equal his own Nigerian 100m record. Racing in the lane next to Seville, Ajayi looked across at the Jamaican as they crossed the finish line, separated by just 0.03. Romell Glave was third in a PB of 9.97, the same time as Emmanuel Eseme in fourth.
USA’s world 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin ran a PB to pip home star Matthew Hudson-Smith in the 400m, Benjamin clocking 44.05 and Hudson-Smith 44.18. Jacory Patterson was third in 44.25. Dominican Republic’s Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino maintained her 400m win streak, charging away from her rivals down the home straight to triumph in 48.97 – her fourth race under 49 seconds this season. Henriette Jæger was runner-up in a Norwegian record of 49.15, while Stacey Ann Williams finished third in 49.52.

Two-lap triumph for Hodgkinson and Miller

London offered Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol their first ever clash over 800m and it ended with a first win of the season for Olympic champion Hodgkinson in front of a home crowd. Taking to the track a short while after Kerr’s world record, Hodgkinson claimed the final win of the day in 1:56.21 as world 400m hurdles champion Broeders-Bol clocked 1:56.46. Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma was third in 1:56.92.
USA’s Brandon Miller ran the race of his life to clinch his 800m win, improving his PB by almost a second to 1:42.19. Miller tracked Kenya’s world and Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Great Britain’s Max Burgin, who won at the Diamond League in Rabat, as they approached the final bend. Timing his kick to perfection, Miller catapulted himself off the curve and his rivals had no response – he took the win ahead of Ireland’s fast-finishing Mark English who also dipped under 1:43 for the first time with 1:42.97. Burgin was third in 1:43.30 and Wanyonyi – who ran a world 1000m record in Monaco just eight days earlier – finished fourth in 1:43.31.
Australia’s Olympic 1500m silver medallist Jessica Hull also used a fierce kick to take victory in the 3000m. Content to sit back in the early stages, she made her way up the field and surged hard with 200 metres remaining. Rose Davies gave chase but couldn’t catch her compatriot – Hull winning in 8:24.69 ahead of Davies in a PB of 8:25.38. The next three also set PBs – Sarah Healy in 8:25.63, Hannah Nuttall in 8:26.48 and Fantaye Belayneh in 8:26.98.
Australia’s world champion Nicola Olyslagers and Ukraine’s world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh were evenly matched in the high jump as they both cleared an outdoor world-leading height of 2.01m, Olyslagers clinching the win on countback. Germany’s multiple global champion Malaika Mihambo kept her cool after four fouls in the long jump, soaring 7.05m in the fifth round to win ahead of Claire Bryant with a leap of 6.94m.
USA’s two-time world champion Sam Kendricks won a pole vault contest that ended in disappointment for world record-holder Mondo Duplantis.
Kendricks, Duplantis, Kurtis Marschall and Emmanouil Karalis all cleared 5.95m, Kendricks getting the win on countback thanks to his first-time clearances up to and including that height. But after failing once at 5.85m and passing straight to 5.95m, which he cleared first time, Duplantis had his left thigh strapped and then decided to retire from the competition.
“It wasn't my best day,” said Duplantis. “I need to go back, reassess and maybe get a scan. I am sorry to the fans for not putting a good performance together.”

Great Britain’s Josh Kerr achieved his much-publicised aim of breaking the long-standing world mile record with a stunning 3:42.66* run at the Novuna London Athletics Meet

Kerr breaks world mile record with 3:42.66 in London

Deep fields full of global medallists and world record-holders will light up the Novuna London Athletics Meet when Wanda Diamond League action continues in the UK capital on Saturday (18).
Emmanuel Wanyonyi races the 800m a week on from becoming the fastest 1000m runner in history. His fellow world record-holder Ja’Kobe Tharp headlines the 110m hurdles and Josh Kerr goes on the hunt for a world record of his own.
Julien Alfred, Mondo Duplantis, Keely Hodgkinson, Femke Broeders-Bol and Yaroslava Mahuchikh are among the many other world and Olympic champions who will be in London as the race towards the Diamond League Final in Brussels and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest in September intensifies.
Kenya’s Olympic and world 800m champion Wanyonyi improved the world 1000m record by 0.13 during the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, running 2:11.83 on his debut at the distance. Now he returns to race the 800m. His opposition includes Britain’s Max Burgin, who handed Wanyonyi one of his two Diamond League 800m defeats this season in Rabat. Mark English, Peter Bol, Bryce Hoppel and Ben Pattison are also in action, while 2022 world 1500m champion Jake Wightman is a late withdrawal after running 2:12.77 when finishing runner-up to Wanyonyi in Monaco, a mark that moved the Briton to fifth on the world all-time list.
“I don’t want to talk about the world record in the 800m,” Wanyonyi said after his Monaco performance, referring to David Rudisha’s mark of 1:40.91 set in the same London stadium almost 14 years ago. “I first want to run fast and improve my personal best. Let me keep quiet, actions speak louder than words.”
Olympic champion Hodgkinson targets her first win of the season in an 800m that pits her for the first time against Dutch star Broeders-Bol, who continues her journey from the 400m hurdles to the 800m, as well as Ethiopia’s Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma.
Hodgkinson sits second on this season’s world top list with the national record of 1:54.33 she ran during the Diamond League in Stockholm and she clocked 1:56.73 in Eugene despite feeling the effects of a fall she suffered the day before she flew to the US. World 400m hurdles champion Broeders-Bol ran 1:55.60 in Paris, while Duguma has clocked 1:57.24 so far this year. Isabelle Boffey and Jemma Reekie will also be racing on home soil.
"I’m not putting any pressure on myself to chase times to everybody else’s expectation," said Hodgkinson, who broke the world 800m short track record indoors in February, during the pre-event press conference. "I know what I am capable of and I know it’s going to be there when I need it. Whether that’s tomorrow, whether that’s at the European final, whether it’s at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship – I trust my team, I’ll be ready when I need to be. I’m in a good place."
Kerr has made no secret of his plan to attack the long-standing world mile record on home soil. The 2023 world 1500m champion and two-time Olympic medallist will be paced by his training partner Brannon Kidder as he targets 3:42 as part of ‘project 222’ – the number of seconds he hopes to complete the distance in to improve on the world record of 3:43.13 set by Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome in 1999.
Kerr currently sits sixth on the world all-time list with the British record of 3:45.34 he set in Eugene in 2024 and in London he will line up alongside the athlete two places ahead of him on that all-time list – USA’s Olympic medallist Yared Nuguse who ran 3:43.97 in 2023. Joining them in the field are Mohamed Abdilaahi, who ran a world lead of 7:25.77 to win the 3000m in Shanghai in May, and his German compatriot Robert Farken, plus Ethan Strand.
"My body is capable of the mark, so my job tomorrow is to have my mind be available to let my body do its job," said Kerr. "My goal is to get through 1200 metres as smoothly as possible and then see what I’ve got left for that last 400 metres.
"What you’ll see out there tomorrow is all of me."
The 3000m pits Australia’s Olympic 1500m silver medallist Jessica Hull, fresh off pacing Agnes Ngetich to the third-fastest performance in history (8:08.95) in Monaco, against her compatriots Linden Hall and Georgia Griffith, Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa and Hirut Meshesha, and Great Britain’s Megan Keith and Laura Muir.

Tharp in sharp form

The 110m hurdles stars three of the seven fastest men of all time as world record-holder Ja'Kobe Tharp renews his rivalry with his compatriots Jamal Britt and Cordell Tinch.
Tharp set a surprise world record of 12.75 during last month’s NCAA Championships semifinals and backed it up with 12.90 in the final. He then won at the Continental Tour Gold meeting in Budapest on Tuesday in 12.85 – the fifth-fastest performance in history – despite celebrating ahead of the finish. In that most recent race he beat Britt, the winner ahead of Tharp at the Diamond League in Eugene in a PB of 12.86, and world champion Tinch, who clocked 12.87 last year.
Adding further strength to the field are world silver medallist Orlando Bennett and 2022 world silver medallist Trey Cunningham, who won the Rome Diamond League in a PB of 12.98.
Another world record-holder leads the entries for the 400m hurdles as Norway’s Karsten Warholm returns to the scene of his first world title win in 2017. He seeks his first Diamond League win of the season after runner-up finishes in Oslo, Shanghai and Xiamen where he ran 46.82. Only Alison dos Santos has gone quicker than that in 2026 and while the Brazilian won’t be in London, Warholm does face Emil Agyekum, who won in Budapest on Tuesday, as well as Ezekiel Nathaniel, Trevor Bassitt, Matheus Lima and Caleb Dean.
Saint Lucia’s Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred blazed to third on the world 200m all-time list with 21.51 in Monaco. USA’s Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas also impressed there with 21.84 for third place, following her 21.70 run in Texas. They raced separately in Budapest earlier this week – Alfred winning the 100m in 10.87 and Thomas the 200m in 21.83 – but they clash again in London, Alfred as the meeting record-holder thanks to her 21.71 from last year.
They will line up for the 200m alongside Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt as well as Bahamian two-time Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo.
Jamaica’s Oblique Seville returns as the world champion to defend his 100m crown. The world leader, who ran 9.82 in Kingston in June and 9.88 to win in Monaco last week, again takes on USA’s world indoor 60m champion Jordan Anthony, who was the runner-up in Monaco, as well as NCAA champion Kayinsola Ajayi, who beat Seville in Eugene in 9.84, and British record-holder Zharnel Hughes.
World 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin continues to focus on the flat event as he races the 400m against home star Matthew Hudson-Smith and Jacory Patterson, while Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino heads the women’s field against Henriette Jæger and Yemi Mary John.

Duplantis makes London return

Swedish pole vault star Mondo Duplantis returns to compete in London for the first time since 2018. In that time he has become a 15-time world record-breaker, taking the mark to 6.31m, as well as a two-time Olympic, three-time world and four-time world indoor champion. He has surpassed six metres in seven of his eight competitions this year, suffering a rare defeat to Kurtis Marschall during one of them, in Stockholm. Marschall also competes in London, as does Emmanouil Karalis who cleared 6.17m to move to second on the world all-time list in February.
Both Ukraine’s world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Australia’s 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson have cleared 2.00m so far this outdoor season and they clash in the high jump against Patterson’s compatriot Nicola Olyslagers, the world champion, as well as Iryna Gerashchenko and Morgan Lake.
World and Olympic discus champion Valarie Sion will want to maintain a Diamond League win streak that dates back to 2023, while Larissa Iapichino leads the long jump field following her 7.12m Italian record set in Eugene.

Deep fields full of global medallists and world record-holders will light up the Novuna London Athletics Meet when Wanda Diamond League action continues in the UK capital on Saturday

Star-studded fields ready to line up in London

Emmanuel Wanyonyi made his 1000m debut in sensational style, running 2:11.83* to break the long-standing world record at the Meeting International d’Athlétisme Herculis EBS in Monaco on Friday (10).
With that performance at the Wanda Diamond League meeting, the Olympic and world 800m champion took 0.13 off the world record of 2:11.96 set by his Kenyan compatriot Noah Ngeny in Rieti in 1999.
It was a night of record-breaking performances at the Louis II Stadium. As well as Wanyonyi’s historic mark, meeting records and some of the fastest performances of all time were achieved by Agnes Ngetich, Julien Alfred, Collen Kebinatshipi, Masai Russell and Marileidy Paulino. Meeting records also fell in the field through Miltiádis Tentóglou in a long jump contest of record depth and Mondo Duplantis, while Nina Kennedy set a world-leading Oceanian record of 4.95m in the pole vault.
Wanyonyi followed the pacemakers as the first, Patryk Sieradzki, reached 400m on world record pace in 50.95 as planned. The second pacemaker Louey Ouerrat hit 800m in 1:45.11 before Wanyonyi took over and stormed towards the finish, chased hard by 2022 world 1500m champion Jake Wightman.
Wanyonyi charged over the line in 2:11.83, Wightman followed him in 2:12.77 to move to fifth on the world all-time list and world and Olympic medallist Djamel Sedjati was third in 2:13.94 as the top six all dipped under 2:15.
“This was the first time I ran the 1000m and breaking the world record makes me so happy,” said Wanyonyi. “I want to thank the other athletes who pushed me to my limit.”
Agnes Ngetich also surged up the world all-time list, winning the 3000m in a meeting record of 8:08.95 – the third-fastest performance in history.
The athlete who sits second on that all-time list is her Kenyan compatriot Faith Kipyegon – the world 1500m and mile record-holder who achieved her mile mark in Monaco in 2023. The multiple global gold medallist was also in 3000m action but, continuing her comeback after a hamstring injury following her 5000m win in Shanghai in May, she finished fourth this time in 8:24.21 behind Ngetich, Aleshign Baweke in a PB of 8:23.81 and Senayet Getachew in a PB of 8:24.02.
It was a dominant run by Ngetich in her first track race of the year – a year she started by winning the world cross-country title in Tallahassee in January. Ngetich set off right behind the pacemakers in Monaco and followed Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull, who helped to pace Kipyegon to her 8:07.04 3000m in Silesia in August, as she hit 1000m in 2:41.85.
Ngetich took control with three laps to go and passed 2000m in 5:24.08. She slipped off world record pace over the last couple of laps but managed to hold on to become the third-quickest runner in history.

Alfred No.3 all time with 21.51

A race between the three fastest women of the year produced the third-fastest athlete in history as Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred blazed to a world-leading meeting and national record of 21.51 (0.9m/s) in the 200m.

The Olympic 100m champion powered away to leave Adaejah Hodge, who started as the world leader on 21.68, and Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas in her wake – Hodge finishing second in 21.76 and Thomas, in her first Diamond League race in two years, placing third in 21.84.
Alfred now sits third on the world all-time list. Only Florence Griffith Joyner and Shericka Jackson have ever gone quicker.
“I have been preparing for this for such a long time,” said Alfred. “I didn’t realise how fast it was until I crossed the line. I looked at the clock and saw my time and that’s why I was screaming like at the Olympics.”
Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi ran even quicker than he did to win his world title in Tokyo, clocking a national record of 43.44 to improve the Diamond League record he set in Paris less than two weeks ago by a tenth of a second.
He finished clear ahead of Jacory Patterson and world 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin, Kebinatshipi improving on the PB of 43.53 he set in Tokyo to move to joint sixth on the world all-time list. Patterson was second in 43.96 and Benjamin was third in 44.13.
Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino demonstrated her trademark finishing strength to take another win in the women’s 400m, breaking the meeting record with 48.67. The Olympic champion judged her race to perfection, chasing Lurdes Gloria Manuel and Aaliyah Butler to the final bend before striding past them to take the win. Butler was second in a PB of 48.84 and Manuel was third in 49.44.
Another meeting record fell in the 100m hurdles as USA’s Masai Russell maintained her superb run of form to win in 12.20 (-0.4m/s). The Olympic champion, who ran 12.14 at the Diamond League meeting in Xiamen to miss the world record by just 0.02, now owns four of the top seven performances in history. Alaysha Johnson was second in 12.38 and Nadine Visser was third in 12.49.
Jamaica’s world champion Oblique Seville clinched the final win of the evening, taking the 100m in 9.88 ahead of world indoor 60m champion Jordan Anthony and Emmanuel Eseme. Seville, who holds the world lead of 9.82, finished second in his last Diamond League race in Eugene on Saturday but rebounded to edge Anthony in 9.92 and Eseme in 10.00.
Kenya’s Olympic finalist Simon Koech dominated the 3000m steeplechase, winning in 8:03.35 ahead of Japan’s Ryuji Miura in 8:10.30. The 5000m came down to a sprint finish, Switzerland's Dominic Lobalu winning a fierce fight with USA’s Graham Blanks – 12:52.54 to 12:52.60.

Tentoglou soars 8.61m in competitive clash, Kennedy vaults 4.95m

The long jump featured record depth during a highly competitive contest. Greece’s two-time Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou achieved the second-best winning mark of his career – 8.61m (0.0m/s), just four centimetres off his PB – in the final round to set a meeting record and world lead. He had led the competition from his very first jump of 8.48m and his impressive series also included leaps of 8.52m, 8.49m and 8.34m.

For the first time in history, five men jumped beyond 8.30m in a single competition. Olympic silver medallist Wayne Pinnock was second on 8.39m, world U20 record-holder Jorge Hodelín was third on 8.38m, world indoor bronze medallist Bozhidar Sarâboyukov was fourth on 8.36m and Simon Ehammer, who started as the world leader after jumping 8.51m during the decathlon at Götzis, finished fifth on 8.32m.
"When you jump 8.50m and then you jump 8.60m – that is just crazy. I do not think it happened many times in history," said Tentoglou, who improved a meeting record set by Iván Pedroso in 1995. "I know I am in really good shape and to be honest, I wanted a little bit more. The meeting record from Pedroso – that is the most important for me today."
The Herculis featured both women’s and men’s pole vault contests for the first time and they didn’t disappoint, Nina Kennedy improving the Oceanian record to 4.95m and Mondo Duplantis clearing a meeting record of 6.07m.
Kennedy managed all heights from 4.52m to 4.82m on her first attempts. After one failed attempt at 4.87m, and with the competition won as Amanda Moll knocked the bar twice after passing to that height following one failed attempt at 4.82m, Kennedy had the bar moved straight to 4.95m. She managed that on her first try, too, to move to joint fifth on the world all-time list – with the highest vault in the world since 2021 – before taking three attempts at 5.00m. Moll was second thanks to her 4.72m clearance.
The men’s pole vault was not a Diamond League discipline but Sweden’s world record-holder Mondo Duplantis – now a Monaco resident – still put on a show. He cleared 5.70m, 5.85m and a meeting record of 6.07m on his first attempts before taking three unsuccessful attempts at 6.15m.
Cuba’s Leyanis Pérez Hernández achieved the leap of her life to win the triple jump, surpassing 15-metres with a legal wind for the first time with 15.06m (-0.1m/s) in the final round.
Before that, the world champion sat in second place with her opening jump of 14.80m – a mark she followed with four fouls. World indoor bronze medallist Saly Sarr had the lead at that point with 14.85m from the fourth round, but they both had more to give. Sarr improved to a PB of 14.99m (0.7m/s) in the final round but Pérez Hernández had the next jump and she maintained her composure to soar 15.06m, adding eight centimetres to her two-year-old PB to become the latest member of the 15-metre club. Sarr finished second with that 14.99m PB, while Olympic champion Thea LaFond was third on 14.79m (-0.9m/s).
China’s world U20 champion Yan Ziyi also saved her best for last, winning the javelin with 68.75m in the final round. The 18-year-old, who threw 71.74m in Xiamen to move to second on the world all-time list, held the lead from the second round as she opened with a foul before managing 64.60m. Two-time world U20 champion Adriana Vilagoš was second on 63.18m.
The men’s high jump was won by Ukraine’s world indoor champion Oleh Doroshchuk thanks to his clearance of 2.32m. Kimani Jack cleared 2.30m to finish second, while Sarvesh Anil Kushare was third on 2.26m.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi made his 1000m debut in sensational style, running 2:11.83* to break the long-standing world record at the Meeting International d’Athlétisme Herculis EBS

Wanyonyi breaks world 1000m record with 2:11.83 in Monaco

Every elite field at the Meeting International d’Athlétisme Herculis EBS features a reigning Olympic, world or world indoor champion as the sport’s leading lights return to Monaco for the 10th Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season on Friday (10).
In many cases those global gold medallists will go head-to-head – Julien Alfred and Gabby Thomas in the 200m, Mattia Furlani and Miltiadis Tentoglou in the long jump, Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy in the pole vault, Thea LaFond and Leyanis Pérez in the triple jump, and Oblique Seville, Letsile Tebogo and Jordan Anthony in the 100m are just some of the top-class clashes on offer.
Faith Kipyegon is back at the scene of her world mile record, while another world record-holder headlines the pole vault as Mondo Duplantis returns to familiar territory to defend his Herculis crown.
Two Olympic champions come together in the 200m as USA’s Thomas takes on Saint Lucia’s Alfred. Thomas, the Olympic 200m champion, opens her Diamond League season one month on from running 21.70 – the third-fastest time of her career – in Texas, while Olympic 100m champion Alfred seeks her third Diamond League win of the season following her 100m and 200m victories in Oslo and Rome. But they will have to contend with world leader Adaejah Hodge, the 20-year-old who ran 21.68 last month and finished third in the 100m on her Diamond League debut in Eugene on Saturday.
The men’s 100m is similarly stacked as Jamaica’s world champion Seville faces Botswana’s Olympic 200m champion Tebogo and USA’s world indoor 60m champion Anthony. Seville, who holds the world lead of 9.82, and Tebogo will both be looking to rebound after finishing second in the 100m and the 200m, respectively, in Eugene.
USA’s Masai Russell has been edging closer to the world 100m hurdles record, her 12.14 at the Diamond League meeting in Xiamen missing the global mark by just 0.02. The Olympic champion is unbeaten in the discipline this year, her most recent performance being her 12.24 in Eugene on Saturday, but among those looking to challenge her are Nadine Visser, Pia Skrzyszowska and Alaysha Johnson.
Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi and Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino set Diamond League 400m records in Paris and they both star in Monaco. World champion Kebinatshipi will aim to maintain his Diamond League 400m win streak after victories in Xiamen, Paris and Eugene – the latter ahead of world 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin, who is a late addition to the Monaco field. Like Kebinatshipi, Zakithi Nene has dipped under 44 seconds this season – when finishing runner-up to Kebinatshipi in Paris – and will want to challenge again, along with Matt Hudson-Smith and Jacory Patterson.
Olympic champion Paulino is also unbeaten in the Diamond League 400m so far this year after wins in Doha and Paris. She takes on the likes of Nickisha Pryce, who won the Diamond League in Shanghai, plus Lurdes Gloria Manuel and Roxana Gómez.

Kipyegon and Wanyonyi return

Kenya’s Kipyegon created history at the Louis II Stadium with her world mile record of 4:07.64 in 2023 and she returns to race the 3000m.
The multiple global gold medallist opened her track season with a 5000m win in Shanghai after a road 10km debut in Monaco in February and continues her comeback following a hamstring injury. The mile in Eugene on Saturday was her first race since Shanghai and she finished third, two places ahead of Olympic and world 1500m medallist Jess Hull who set a world 2000m record in Monaco in 2024 and runs as a pacemaker this time. They line up alongside two-time world indoor gold medallist Freweyni Hailu and world cross-country champion Agnes Ngetich in her first track race of the season, plus French Olympic triathlon champion Cassandre Beaugrand.
Another Olympic triathlon champion goes in the men’s 5000m as Great Britain’s Alex Yee races world silver medallist Isaac Kimeli, Biniam Mehary and Birhanu Balew, who ran an Asian record of 12:47.73 in Oslo.
The men’s 1000m is also a clash of global medallists. Kenya’s world and Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the 800m in Monaco in 1:41.44 last year, breaking a meeting record that had been set by Algeria’s world and Olympic medallist Djamel Sedjati the year before, and the pair compete again – this time over the slightly longer distance – in a race also starring world leader Mohamed Attaoui, 2022 world 1500m champion Jake Wightman, Ben Pattison, Bryce Hoppel and Gabriel Tual.
New Zealand’s world champion Geordie Beamish seeks his first Diamond League win of the year as he goes in a 3000m steeplechase rematch against world bronze medallist Edmund Serem, Olympic bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwot and Simon Koech, who broke eight minutes in Rabat.

Fierce field fights at every turn

For the first time, the Herculis will feature both men’s and women’s pole vault contests, giving Sweden’s world record-holder Mondo Duplantis – now a Monaco resident – the chance to build on the meeting record of 6.05m he set last year. The men’s competition is not a Diamond League discipline this year but it still features a strong field as world and Olympic champion Duplantis faces multiple world medallist Kurtis Marschall, who beat him in Stockholm.
The women’s event is another that pits world champion against Olympic champion as USA’s Katie Moon faces Australia’s Nina Kennedy – both with a best of 4.80m so far this year – as well as Imogen Ayris and in-form twin sisters Hana and Amanda Moll.
Dominica’s Olympic champion Thea LaFond produced the best women’s triple jump performance in the world for almost four years in Zagreb recently as she soared a national record of 15.25m to win by almost half a metre ahead of Cuba’s world champion Leyanis Pérez Hernández. They clash again in a quality contest that also features Davisleydi Velazco, who jumped 15.13m last month, and world indoor bronze medallist Saly Sarr.
Italy’s world champion Mattia Furlani is set to make his return after the injury he sustained during the Diamond League meeting in Xiamen and he is not easing himself back in gently as he goes up against all five men who sit ahead of him on this season’s world long jump top list: world leader Simon Ehammer, who jumped 8.51m during the decathlon at Götzis, plus two-time Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou, world indoor champion Gerson Baldé, world indoor bronze medallist Bozhidar Sarâboyukov and 19-year-old Jorge Hodelín who set a world U20 record of 8.46m last month.
Since throwing 71.74m in Xiamen to move to second on the world javelin all-time list, China’s 18-year-old Yan Ziyi has clinched two more Diamond League meeting wins in Oslo and Paris and is the athlete to beat in Monaco. Looking to challenge her are Japan’s Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi and Sigrid Borge, who sits second on the season top list with her 65.00m throw for the runner-up spot in Xiamen.
In the high jump, Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk, who recently jumped an outdoor PB of 2.33m, faces Jan Štefela, Kimani Jack and Sarvesh Anil Kushare, who have all also surpassed 2.30m this year, plus multiple global champions Mutaz Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi, the latter a late entry.
