Kenyan New Year road races provide few surprises

There were no major surprises at the two New Year road races in Kenya held over the weekend.

James Yatich won the annual Baringo half-marathon race on January 4, an event which boasts the support of Paul Tergat the World recordholder for the Marathon. The race was held in
his native Baringo home, also home to Kenya’s former Head of State Daniel Arap Moi, among other political heavyweights.

In second place was Moses Kibet while Evans Kiprop was third.

Elsewhere the same day, Kipkemoi Langat won the iaugural Naftali Temu 10-km senior men’s race in 28:21.59 from Wesley Ochoro (28:24.55) and Machuki Mogire (28:38.92).

The race, held in Borabu, Nyamira, in Nyanza Province, was in
memory of Naftali Temu, the first man to win Kenya an Olympics gold medal, who died last year after a protracted battle with an ailment. Temu won 10,000m gold medal in Mexico in 1968, the Games which remains one of Kenya’s most successful. Other athletics legends from the same area include Charles Asati and Robert Ouko, former sprinters who won Olympics 4x400m gold medal in 1972 Munich Olympics.

Rose Nyanchanga, who won the Kisumu Great Lakes marathon last month, won the women’s 10km race in 33:40.00.
