Living up to the hype, pre-event favourite Maikel Vidal earned the boys' long jump title on Thursday (13), holding off a strong challenge from compatriot Lester Lescay, with Cuba grabbing a one-two in the afternoon session on day two of the IAAF World U18 Championships Nairobi 2017.

While Vidal produced only two legal jumps, his third leap of 7.88m was enough to secure gold as he added three centimetres to his previous personal best and world U18 lead.

Lescay was far more consistent, with three jumps of 7.49m or farther, and though he too set a career record with his final attempt, his 7.79m effort was not enough to bump his countryman off the top spot of the podium.

Andreas Bucsa of Romania, who held the second best jump this year of all the finalists, took third position with a 7.47m leap.

Lying fourth ahead of the final round, Bucsa received a fortunate mini-boost with the benefit of a 2.8m/s tailwind, as he snatched bronze from South Africa's Julian Bogner who was unable to deliver a better effort with his last jump and settled for fourth place (7.40m).
