Former Millrose meeting director Howard Schmertz dies

The IAAF is saddened to learn that Howard Schmertz, a lawyer who acted as unpaid meeting director of the famed Millrose Games in New York for 29 years from 1975, has died, aged 88.

Born on 9 June 1925 in New York, Schmertz took over the running of the Millrose Games after his father, Fred Schmertz, ran the event for 41 years, from 1934.

Inaugurated in 1908, the Millrose Games was invariably sold out during the meeting’s heyday at the 18,000-capacity Madison Square Garden venue.
