As per tradition at every edition of the biennial IAAF World Championships, the IAAF Council headed by President Sebastian Coe met with their counterparts in the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and their President Thomas Bach.

At the press conference which followed the meeting at the Marriott, West India Quay, London, Thomas Bach made the opening remarks on behalf of the IOC. He confirmed that “we are all enjoying our memories of London 2012, coming back here (to London) and celebrating this Olympic legacy together and looking forward to a great spirit in the next few days at the World Championships.

“We discussed the evaluation of the Rio Olympic Games,” commented Bach. “There we could see that athletics was overall in a position of strength which is a very good sign given the not easy circumstances for athletics at the time.”

Reflecting on that evaluation, Coe confirmed: “I was very pleased to be able to update Thomas and his executive board on the (IAAF’s) journey of reform…even yesterday (at Congress) we were putting the finishing touches to some of the amendments and proposals that form the basis for the 2017 and 2019 Constitution.

“Most crucially, the core pillars which underpin the integrity and trust and the governances which allow us to be a safe and secure sport and organisation were upheld yesterday. The centre piece of these reforms was the creation of the Athletics Integrity Unit.”

The principal topics discussed in the two-hour meeting included:

- Rio 2016 Olympic Games evaluation

- Anti-doping: Athletics Integrity Unit and the soon to be launched Independent Testing Authority

- Manipulation of Betting: cooperation prevention and awareness measures working with Interpol and UN agency against organised crime

The meeting began with Bach presenting Coe with a silver framed photograph of the two Olympic champions together in their competition days when a foil fencer and middle distance athlete.

Sebastian Coe et Thomas Bach « célèbrent ensemble l’héritage olympique de Londres »

Comme le veut la tradition lors de chaque édition des Championnats du Monde de l’IAAF bisannuels, le Conseil de l’IAAF, conduit par le président Sebastian Coe, a rencontré ses homologues de la commission exécutive du Comité International Olympique (CIO) et son président Thomas Bach.

Lors de la conférence de presse qui a suivi la réunion au Marriott de West India Quay à Londres, Thomas Bach a prononcé une allocution inaugurale au nom du CIO. Il a confirmé que « [tout le monde gardait] d’excellents souvenirs de Londres 2012 et se [réjouissait] d’y revenir pour célébrer ensemble l’héritage olympique, et [attendait] avec impatience de plonger dans les prochains jours dans l’atmosphère extraordinaire des Championnats du Monde. »

« Nous avons discuté de l’évaluation des Jeux Olympiques de Rio, a déclaré Thomas Bach. Là-bas, nous avons pu constater que l’athlétisme occupait dans l’ensemble une position de force, ce qui est un signe très positif compte tenu du contexte délicat qui entourait l’athlétisme à l’époque. »

Sebastian Coe lui a emboîté le pas : « J’ai été ravi de pouvoir informer Thomas et sa commission exécutive du processus de réforme [de l’IAAF]… Hier encore [au Congrès], nous apportions la touche finale à quelques-uns des amendements et propositions qui forment le socle des statuts de 2017 et 2019. »

« Plus vital encore, les piliers qui soutiennent l’intégrité et la confiance, et les structures de gouvernance qui permettent à notre sport et à notre organisation d’évoluer dans un climat sain ont été confirmés hier. La pièce maîtresse de ces réformes a été la création de l’Unité d’intégrité de l’athlétisme. »

Les principaux thèmes abordés lors des deux heures de réunion comprenaient notamment :

- L’évaluation des Jeux Olympiques de Rio 2016

- Antidopage : l’Unité d’intégrité de l’athlétisme et l’Autorité de contrôle indépendante qui sera créée prochainement

- Manipulation des paris : coopération sur des mesures de prévention et de sensibilisation avec Interpol et l’Office des Nations unies contre la drogue et le crime

En préambule de cette réunion, Thomas Bach a offert à Sebastian Coe une photo dans un cadre d’argent représentant les deux champions olympiques ensemble du temps de leur période active en compétition, respectivement comme fleurettiste et coureur de demi-fond.
