Boston to host Interprofessional Management of Endurance Medicine conference

Boston’s Northeastern University will host a conference on 13 April intended to help health care providers improve the quality of medical care at mass-participation endurance events.

The Interprofessional Management of Endurance Medicine conference is presented by the IAAF and the International Institute for Race Medicine (IIRM), in conjunction with Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences and the Department of Physical Therapy, Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences.

IIRM’s conferences aim to increase knowledge of basic sports medicine principals, particularly for volunteers in medical tents at endurance events. The conference in April will be held just two days before the Boston Marathon, one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious road races.

The topics that will be covered at the conference are:

• The collapsed athlete: it isn’t always the heart (Paul D Thompson)

• Optimising mechanics to minimise injuries (Irene Davis)

• Athletes with disabilities (David Cormier)

• The musculoskeletal stress of distance running (Rebecca G Breslow)

• The Marine Corps Marathon medical tent experience (Michele Weinstein)

• An IIRM perspective on race medicine (Chris Troyanos)

• Ultrasound in the medical tent (Pierre d’Hemecourt)

• Exertional hyponatremia / iSTAT (Kathryn Ackerman)

• Exertional hyperthermia (Brendon McDermott and Dawn Marie Emerson)

• Use of massage therapy in the medical tent (Laura Bergmann)

• Mass casualty triage and acute traumatic injuries (David R King)

• Cardiac/12-Lead monitor use (Paul D Thompson)
