The IAAF is deeply saddened to hear that Asian Athletics Association Honorary President Seiko Yasuda died on Tuesday (7).
A highly respected administrator, Yasuda was elected president of the Asian Athletics Association in 1979 and served three terms over 12 years until his retirement in 1991. During his time in office, Yasuda introduced the Asian Junior Championships in 1986 and the first Asian Marathon Championships. He also secured sponsorship for many of the AAA’s events.
Other events Yasuda organised include the 1958 Asian Games and the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo.
He was presented with the IAAF Veterans Pin in 1980 and made an honorary president of the AAA in 1991.
“Mr Yasuda provided dedicated and significant services to our sport and contributed enormously to the development of athletics both in Japan and across Asia,” said IAAF President Sebastian Coe. “His impact will not be forgotten.”
