Stephane Franke, distance runner and commentator, loses fight to cancer

MonteCarloStephane Franke, 47, died last Thursday morning (23 June) after a short but hopeless fight against a cancer detected and diagnosed only five weeks ago.


Stephane lived in Berlin, Potsdam with his ten-year-old daughter.


He was a top world class runner in the 1990s, twice Bronze medal winner at the European Championships over 10,000m, Olympic and World Championship finalist with a Marathon best of 2:11:26.


After his career he worked as a coach and manager of some top ranked German athletes and published several books about Running and Nordic Walking.


He started to work for Eurosport as a Marathon and Athletic Co-Commentator 2001.


Stephane was the expert and interviewer for Eurosport International in the Mixed Zone during the IAAF World Championships in Paris 2003.


Since 2008 he was part of the German Athletic Commentary team and by his talent, passion and commitment he took over the Cross Country Skiing as our key commentator 2008.


In 2001, he also served as the director of the ISTAF meeting.
