Cantwell puts 21.47m, and lines up for Valencia permit meet

USA’s reigning World indoor champion Christian Cantwell blasted out a world season leading 21.47m put in Nordhausen, Germany on Friday (23), so repeating his 2008 victory (21.35) at the same meeting.

Cantwell’s last round mark was a meet record and beat reigning outdoor World champion Reese Hoffa who was second with 20.34 ahead of European champion Ralf Bartels with 20.14. Peter Sack was fourth (19.21).

On the same day it was declared that Cantwell, 28, will compete in the IAAF Indoor permit meeting in Valencia, Spain on 14 February. By signing up for the Reunión Internacional Atletismo "Ciudad de Valencia", the American will compete again the sector in the Palaa Luis Puig that last winter witnessed him claim the World Indoor crown.

Cantwell who has an indoor PB of 22.18m (2008) was also World Indoor champion in 2004, and in the summer of 2008 became Olympic silver medallist. His outdoor PB is 22.54 (2004).

Also in Nordhausen on Friday, World Junior champion David Storl improved the German junior indoor best to 21.10 (6 kg) implement.

Denise Hinrichs won the women’s competition with 18.36. Sweden national record holder Helena Engman was second (16.96).
