| Michael Johnson won an astonishing fourth consecutive world title with an incredible world record performance of 43.18. His advantage over the second athlete was 1.11 seconds, the biggest in the history of the World Championships. Johnson bettered the previous record, which was held by Harry Butch Reynolds (43,29) for eleven years and nine days. This brings Johnson's total world medal count to eight: four in 400 metres, two in 200 metres and two in 4x400 metres. He ties with Carl Lewis at the top of the list of gold medallists. The silver medal was taken by Claro Sanderlei Parrela (BRA) who once again broke the South American record, with 44.29. The Mexican Alejandro Cardenas was third with 44.31, a new national record. The current World Indoor Champion, Briton Jamie Baulch was eighth with 45.18. |

Su ventaja sobre el siguiente clasificado fue de 1.11 segundos, la mayor lograda por el
vencedor sobre el segundo en los anteriores campeonatos del mundo. Johnson batio el
anterior record del mundo de Harry "Butch" Reynolds (43.29) despues de once anos
y nueve dias. Con este triunfo logra su octavo titulo de campeon mundial con 4 en 400
