The silver medallist in the High Jump, Oleksandr Nartov was one of only three athletes competing  this evening not to set a personal best in this competition.

The Ukrainian’s best was the World leading mark of the year, of 2.28 metres, this evening he jumped 10 centimetres less, failing three attempts at 2.20 and leaving the event open to China’s Haiqiang Huang.

Huang had a clear run through to 2.20 metres, before two failures at 2.24, a height he cleared at his third attempt. He then elected to have the bar raised to 2.27 metres, a height he cleared at his first attempt. He closed his competition with three unsuccessful attempts at 2.30.

The bronze medal went to Spain’s Alex Soto on countback, with Sylvester Bednarek of Poland also clearing this height.

No fewer than ten athletes improved their best performances in this competition.
